Hi my 23 month dd has had a runny nose and cold for about 10 days and i noticed that she seemed to be breathing very fast at times and sounded crackerly she was never distressed by this. but i took her to the doctor who said she thought it might be bronchilitos and she may need to go to hospital though she looks to well, so she rang the hospital who told her to try ventilon and she seemed to think it worked and has now said my dd has asthma. she is now on ventilpn and predmix. I find this hard to believe as i thought asthma was more wheezing and not being able to breathe and distressing for the child. i saw another doctor in this time who told me that she couldn't hear the same crackling and that they can't diagnose asthma in a child this young. I then saw the 1st doctor the day after that and she started talking about preventative medication and when i said the other doctor said they could'nt diagnose asthma she said that because the ventilon had helpd her it was asthma. i am really confused and sacared.
I was wondering if any parents can tell me what an asthma attack is like in their experince and if the child is usally distressed.

thanks dhdmum

hi and welcome to bubhub:wave:

My son is the same age as your dd and has had three asthma episodes early in the year.

The first two episodes he got a cold and a viral infection which bought on the asthma and no my son was not distressed by it, he was still very active and running around etc

But some children are distressed by asthma episodes,

In re: to diagnoses its not commonly diagnosed in very young children However they still treat it as asthma iykwim

I found after the first episode and stay in hopsital my son reacted very badly on the heavy doses of steroids meds they had him on and became very emotional, aggressive and would have fits of crying for hours...........it was really bad.

So i started researching other alternatives, I took ds to a natropath and she put ds on natural herbal drops, as my son has allergies (which were diagnosed alot earlier) she also treated him for that as it is associated with eczema/asthma etc.

I found the natural herbal drops to work really well and helped to maintain ds's overall health, also when he had his next episode of asthma it wasnt as bad and then by the third one it was minimal and didnt require hospitalisation.

We also monitor his diet and the environment as he is highly allergic to dustmites.

If I were you I would of course continue on the meds while your dd is sick but once she is well seek a third opinon, maybe research some alternative remedies to help boost her natural immunities and to help prevent further asthma episodes.

Also we found that once we knew what his triggers were we could help to prevent further attacks, eg our son has allergies to dustmites/dairy and egg so we avoid theses things. Also when he gets sick with a virus his body is perceptable to asthma coming on so we kep up his natural drops to help maintain his health.

I hope your little one is well soon!
