View Full Version : Scan showing me at 6w2d, thought I was 8w2d?!
I've just had my first scan with my obgyn. He measured me as being 6w2d. He had to do a vaginal ultrasound as only the sac showed up when doing the external ultrasound. I do have a retroverted uterus, so he said that can make it harder to get a picture with external u/s this early on.
A heartbeat was visable but he measured me to be just over 6 weeks. I asked was there any chance he was wrong, and he said he could be a few days out.
All sounds simple, I got my dates mixed up, except...
My husband and I only dtd once after my (originally) suspected ovulation date (9/5) and that was on 11/5.
I tested positive in a pregnancy test on 17/5
On 24/5 my hcg levels came back quite high (even for 4.5 weeks)
So, although it could be possible that I am a few days, and maybe (although the facts would contradict it) a week behind what I thought I was, I cant see how I could be nearly 2 weeks behind.
My obgyn said that there would not be a problem with the fetus as showing a heartbeat indicates that it is viable and my intense nausea/vomiting indicates a healthy baby.
I am going for a repeat u/s next week to see growth. But to say I'm confused is an understatement.
Has this happened to anyone before?
I have not experienced anything like it & you are correct it just doesn't seem to add up at all. I wish you all the best with the next scan.
Were your dates taken from the LMP??
No, my lmp was actually a miscarriage. I took opk's to determine my ovulation date. It's possible that I could have been half a week out but you can only get a bfp a finite no of days after conception and only 1-3 days after does not seem logical.
i'm hoping the retroverted uterus was the reason I could not get accurate measurements with the scan.

Hey,
I was just thinking... maybe when you conceived, lets say on the 11th, implantation didn't occur for quite a long time after. I've heard that it can take up to 14 days, so this could be around the 25th (which would make you 7wks 3 days now... and, maybe your BFP was from residual hormones from your M/C?? Also, my Ob said the ultrasounds have a margin of error of 1 week either side of the date they give you... this could make you say 7 weeks 2 days (a week later than the scan date they gave you). I know there are a lot of "ifs", but it might explain why you aren't as far along as you thought... it's very confusing I know, I hate it!!
I have posted elsewhere about this, but when I had my first scan I thought I was about 6 1/2 weeks but it only measured at 5 weeks 4 days... but this week when I went to the Ob she did another scan and my dates added up perfectly to what I thought they should be, I wasn't the week behind afterall. It was like my bub had caught up all of a sudden.
Oh, the other thing is, for my 8 week scan the baby had changed a great deal from the scan at "5 weeks 4 days" At the earlier one it was just a sac with a heartbeat like yours, but by 8 weeks it was a definite baby-shape and so much bigger! I'd say from what you've described that you probably aren't 8 weeks quite yet. That change in shape supposedly happens between 7 and 8 weeks gestation.
I hope I haven't confused you further. Good luck with your next scan :)

Hey hun, correct me if im wrong cause i could be thinking of someone else, but didnt u have an early scan to assess vialitlity after the spotting?
And im sure it said that ur dates were correct?
So maybe baby is just a little on the smaller side?
its been a while since we chatted, so i hope all is well, dan mad cause my sms bill trippled, lol
Hi bgbg
So happy your scan was overall positive, i am not sure about dates but have heard of people being put back or put forward over a week before with scans, bub could of just implanted late, always issues when falling straight after a mc with dates, also i am sure it can happen for scan dates being a week out, who knows later scans may put you forward in dates.
end of the day as long as its a healthy sticky bub for you :cloud9:

i said it on texts and in the tww thread, i am sorry for ur loss hun, and i am here when ever u need me.
sorry for your loss
With all my dating scans i knew my dates were right and they always got changed, with my daughter they put me a week back and when i had her she was very over due. her skin was peeling off and she had absolutly none of the white stuff,
i knew when i O but they just assumed they were right, small babies run in my family and they dont seem to account for that.
I'm sorry about your loss. I had a bad feeling that's where you were headed. :hugs:

:hugs: So sorry for your loss.
When I found out I was pregnant this time I was sure my dates were right?? I calculated I was due about the 6th Dec but when I had my early dating scan it put me back to the 20th Dec. I thought I was about 8 weeks preggers and they said I was only 5 weeks 1 day (+ or - a week). It didn't sound right!
I am now 17 weeks and have had 2 other scans each catching up to my original date, 2nd scan said 17th Dec and 3rd scan said 13th Dec. So I'm sure I was right after all!
Thanks for all your kind hugs and wishes.
I've had the d&c and it was done so well, very minimal blood loss and cramping, I have an excellent obgyn. Not having to know of the little baby being dead inside me for more than 1 (very sad) night was good. I also felt that something was not right, I think that's what provoked me to get the impromptu scan on Mon. The excessive nausea and spotting throughout was alarming. I always got some spotting and some nausea with my other pregnancies, but this one felt extreme.
The obgyn was fairly confident that the baby had a genetic abnormality and my body was being efficient to let it go naturally, rather than forcing me to make a difficult decision later. He said the chances of it happening again are very slight as its nothing to do with my body's ability to hold a pregnancy, and that we can try after my next period and there's excellent chances I will carry it to term.
So will enjoy some sushi, some champagne and no nausea for a little while now.:o
