Hi, I couldn't get a paediatrician appointment anywhere until I had a written referal from my GP.

In fact technically you do not need a GP referral to see any sort of specialist however if you do not have one you will only get the GP rebate back from Medicare for seeing a specialist, so for most situations it is cheaper for you to see your GP and get a referral to a specialist. Most specialists want you to have a GP referral so they know it is an appropriate referral and so you get the most appropriate rebate back from Medicare.
