Can you use a barrier cream on cotton?

I know you can't use a barrier cream on mcn's but what about cotton terries or cotton prefolds?

If you soak them in nappy san and wash with the recommended detergent in a warm wash (with no mcn's in the wash ofcoarse) would this be ok?

My Mum swore by zinc and castor oil cream when my siblings and I were in nappies and she used terry flats for the lot of us. So I shouldn't think it would be an issue.
