Interesting.

"A US mother has been charged with child neglect for allegedly failing to protect the health of her 251kg son.
Jerri Gray was released from jail on $61,000 bond last Tuesday but is still fighting to be reunited with her 14-year-old son, Alexander Draper, ABC News reports.
The 49-year-old South Carolina woman said if she was not forced to work two jobs, her son's life would be very different."

Sounds like there needs to be some kind of intervention, but surely not prison.

Although I sympathise with having to work 2 jobs, the amount of money that must be spent on food could surely be directed elsewhere.

I do think that 251 kg at 14 is at the point of serious long-term health damage...

Surely a good health program would be better - and cheaper- than incarceration.

Oh My Goodness!

How could you not manage the weight of a 14yr old? You buy the food that is going into him. Massive  ??????
I do realise that some people do have an aversion to weight issues but come on 251kg??

I read the story earlier today - different link though.

The authorities have tried intervention and education etc and help has been offered through the school and nothing seems to 'sink' in with the mother (or the son).

I figure that maybe jail will make her realise that it is serious

I'll look for the link later...

If the child was being starved, it would be child abuse. Seeing as this type of obesity causes health and emotional problems just as severe I fail to see how it should be any different.

She has potentially set him up for Diabeties type 2, heart disease, bowel, colon and other intestinal cancers, high blood pressure, high cholesterol etc.

when will it be ever considered a form of abuse to allow your child, without any medical reason, to become obscenely obese. NOW I hope.

Endangering his life, I say so!

Perhaps if she only worked one job she wouldnt have had to work the second to buy all that food!

Disgusting. She shouldn't be allowed her son back.
