I don't know it'll go, but for DD's 1st Birthday next month, I'm just going to have a BBQ at the local park. DD is kind of interactive, but I doubt she'll care what's going on...so it's just going to be a bit of a get-together just to acknowledge the day really.
Most of the guests are adults...actually, ALL of them will be, unless my bestie brings her baby cousin along (That's about the only baby Chanel's ever had contact with...lol).
At 1yo they don't really pay much attention to the other kids or games etc, so a party where they can just play with toys in each others presence is pretty much enough.
For my dd's 1st birthday we had to cancel our plans of a picnic in the park as we had to rush away to see her great grandma instead ... we ended up having her cousins over for lunch a month later and just had a bbq.
For my ds's 1st birthday, I invited a group of friends I had met on the 'net to meet us for a bbq and picnic at Parramatta Pools (february bub) for the day. We invited kids of all ages and it was great fun sitting in the toddler pools with our little ones and watching them being fascinated by the water! It was a great day out!
First birthdays are more for the adults than the kids ... it is almost as if we would feel guilty if we didn't have photos showing that we marked the occasion with a ceremony of some sort ...
Organise the get together around any older kids that are invited .. maybe some games or entertainment for them and then sit back, relax and enjoy time with your family, friends and bub!

I agree that the 1st birthday is more for the adults somewhat like their 1st Christmas as we feel we have to make a big fuss of it.
I know Boof's 2nd birthday is going to be much more of a big deal because he will be able to interact more etc.
We just had a gathering of close friends & family at my mums as our house isnt big enough & we havent a yard. We combined his blessing with his birthday so it killed two birds with one stone & it was a great day very relaxed. We got bbq chickens, salads, cold meats & bread rolls as well as lots of nibblies.
You have said you dont want a big affair & it is much nicer when things are more intimate so i would go with whatever makes you happy & comfortable. As Kyra said as long as bubs has somewhere safe to play & any entertainment for older kids all will be fine to sit back & relax & enjoy the day.

For Emmy's 1st party which is happening tomorrow :smiliedance:
It is happening at a playcentre as we have invited about 30 kiddies but of course not all of them will come.
My DD has been a social butterfly from what seems like the day she was born  and loves playing with babies ,kiddies and anyone
else around her , she does however love Emmy time and will move away from everyone and just play by herself too so thats why a playcentre is perfect for her and in saying that most of the first birthday parties we have been to are at home or a bbq/picnic and they are always fun to. Im sure whatever you plan will be heaps of fun best of luck:hugs:

I had a nice family bbq in the local park for Indigo's 1st Birthday, held in Feb earlier this year. When I woke up on the day, it was raining! lol, so we moved it to a closer, smaller park which also had shelter and the day went off without a hitch! It was so nice to decorate the little gazebo with streamers, party banners and a few balloons and there was playground equipment nearby for other kids to play on as well.
Danielle - 25
Indigo - 16 months
For my DD2 's 1st birthday I had a Champagne Breakfast and we had a ball! She was fresh and enjoyed herself, and everyone had gone home by lunch time and I could tidy up and DD could sleep and we had a lovely afternoon. I am going to do it all about when DD3 turns one in August!

Since, as has been mentioned, the 1st birthday is for the adults, we are going out to the pub and leaving the kids at home.
 just kidding of course.
We are having a thing at home with family and the babies from our mums group.. should be a hoot!

We had a big party. It was a pirate party and we all dressed up. All the guests had special pirate names and we had lots of themed food and decorations. My mum made a treasure chest cake as well. DD was the only baby there adn the only other kids were 10 and 13. The rest were adults. DD looked at us like we were all nutty. It was fantastic.

I am very undecided about this as well as my little Ella turns 1 soon ... I do know one thing though: I am going to buy her a cake that she can do to it what she pleases , plenty of kodak moments there :yelclap: .
