I hate to admitt it but i have inverted nipples and have never breast fed either of my boys tried but couldn't. With my second child the midwife just gave me a quick try looked at my breast and went nut noway. Omg how rude was that. Anyway nipple shield etc would they help if i had one to take to the hospital? Also i tried expressing as they thought that might pull them out but nope. Id love to be able to breastfeed

The best thing you can do is go to a Lactation Consultant, one that is not attached to a hospital. They are worth their weight in gold.

What about the ABA? They might be able to help or even some of the Natural Parenting sites around?

Yep i would say see a lactation consultant too,my sis had inverted nipples she wore the shields for a while with her first and went on to feed her well over 12 months and her nipples stayed out and successfully fed 2 more children. Good luck I hope that you find someone helpful unlike the first time.

I think there are some products you can get from baby target that pull out inverted nipples - called a nipple puller I think.

I have inverted nipples too :o . The only way I was able to bf was by using a nipple shield and that worked really well for a few weeks.

If you do decide to use one, it's probably a good idea to get a good lactation consultant who can help you wean your bub off the shield - I had a lot of problems with mine and ended up stopping bf at 6 weeks.

One fact seems to have surfaced fro the murky depths of my mind. I don't think that you can use the nipple puller outers after a certain point in your pg: because it might bring on labour? Don't quote me, because I could well be wrong, my only point is that you might not want to wait too long, because you may run out of time...IYKWIM?

Cheers

I had inverted nipples my whole life..but not anymore! After the birth of my DD, I had a lot of trouble feeding her, but I was really determined and had heaps of good nurses helping me..one in particular. I started using nipple shields on the first day and managed to wean her off by the 3rd or 4th, the best help was when they showed me how to squeeze the nipple area from the areaola and shoved it into DD mouth, she soon did the rest and my nipples gradually came out, now they are out all the time. PM me if you need to know anything else...it is possible!!

hi

im 38weeks. I used avent nipplette (nipple puller) for 1-2 months on my inverted nipples in the second trimester. My doctor said it was fine to use and so did a lactation consultant I talked to. Its worked well so far - my nipples pulled out and got larger however they go back in occasionally - so Ive just started doing it again now that Im at term (37weeks+) . The ABA said that I could wait until after the babys born to pull them out - but that using nipple shields or nipple extractors just before your due date is best. It has helped my nipples harden up definitely. Its easy - you wear the nipplette for long periods of time - like overnight - it hurts initially - but you can adjust the stretch. It will be much easier to breastfeed now that Ive used the nipplette Im sure. So thats my suggestion to you or anyone else - Ill let you know how it goes. ;)
