Ok so a quick run down on the situation, my now 6 year old has been known to have hallucinations while sick since about the age of around 4. He gets high temps and thats when they would come out. Like a nightmare, but he was acting it out. Some women get them when pregnant. He is asleep but thinks he is awake.

Lately in the last say 4 months these have been coming at a few times a week, without him being sick. He is fine and still they are here. Im not sure if he is overheating and its whats bringing them on but i feel after another one just a few minutes ago i need to get to the bottom of it.

Its quite destressing to witness, he can see and hear things that we cant and is petrified by them (when he got them when sick he use to scream and hide under the table). He will answer me like he is awake but its like its an automated answer not something he is really feeling. He is just so terribly scared and wants whatever it is to go away. I remember when i was sick at about the age of 13 with something big, i got nightmares that affected me for years. I dont want that to happen to my son. I want it to stop but i dont know how.

Should i go to a GP?

Has anyone else experienced this? As a child or with their own? Any information would truely be very appreciated as im at a loss at what to do next.

Are they night terrors? Sounds like some sort of sleep disorder. Definitely go to your GP.

My DS has nightmares and comes out of bed and doesn't remember, but he is very easy to placate and put back in bed.

I would definitely get a professional opinion if you think something is up. If nothing else, they will be able to give you calming/coping techniques.

It doesnt last long and ive learnt not to let him see how it affects me, to stay very calm and quiet and not try to rush him or anything. I slowly coax him back to bed and he eventually goes back to sleep.

I really want to know how to stop it so i guess to do that first i must find out what causes it. And im presuming a GP wont be able to tell me, it will be off to the phsycologist for us.

Night Terrors!!!
Ds has just grown out of them after 3 years of them.
Sometimes months without them and then bang one every night for weeks.

I went to the GP and he said not to worry as he will grow out of them.

They are so scary and its so heartbreaking watching your child freak out and not be able to help them.

DS wont recognise us or anything.

Ok what helped for us..
Strange things like patting the animals calmed him down.
He would run around the house and so we would just put him in the room with us and one of us would block the door just cuddiling and reassuring him.

Often a drink of water helped or talking about what we would do tomorrow.

There is no easy answer but to ride it out.
We tried cooler pj's lighter blankets ...etc etc etc etc...but we could never pin point one thing that helped.

They ALWAYS happened before 12pm in the lighter sleep.

AND....its not psychological...its actually something hereditary.

Sounds like night terrors, and is more common than you might think. Do some googling for info... there should be heaps out there.

my children have night terrors could be that!

My siblings slept walked and walked and talked around the house while asleep!

We have a history of epilepsy in our family

I would definately have it checked out to at least give yourself peace of mind.

i would say it is just terrors though.

Thanks ladies. And Sabio i had them as a kid from what i can remember, not to the same extent and my parents have never told me about it but i do remember experiencing weird things like looking at my mum and her face becomeing huge like someone was blowing it up like a balloon. I was wide awake, and it freaked me out but i never said anything and of course eventually it went away.
So youve got me thinking about the hereditary thing now!!

I would definately be taking him to the GP. It does sound like night terrors but I would want to make sure!

I read a bit on night terrors and it sounds very very similar. If not exactly the same!! So im going to leave it for now and just see how he goes. If they increase in occurance or severity i will go and see the doctor.

Thanks everyone for your responses, you were a great help!! :-)
