View Full Version : Breast shell question..
I just purchased some Avent comfort breast shells to try to relive my damaged nipples and have so far had them on about half and hour. When I took them off I had collected some milk, not a great deal but quite substantial. I was wondering how long I can keep them on though, the instructions say 40 minutes?
Does anyone else use them... how long do you have them on for and do you collect enough in a day to freeze for a whole bottle feed?
Also I'm using Lanolin as well so these are good to airate the nipples but I was wondring do I use a normal breast pad at night opposed to these - would be a bit uncomfortable I imagine!

Sorry not to be able to help you but was curious about what a breast shell was - is it an alternative to regular expressing?
go to www.avent.com.au under breastfeeding accessories and it shows you them... I'm using them to prevent my nipples rubbing against my bra/pads and to get some air on them... they also double as milk collectors when you leak thus allowing you to pour the milk into storage containers to use later. I don't want to use them all the time just until my nipple damage improves... would be keen to hear what other users think of them.

Thanks for explaining that - wish I had known about them when I had terribly cracked and painful nipples about 2 months ago!

I've been using them for the last 2 days because my 1 year old bit my nipple, made it bleed, then it got infected - so much fun - NOT!
I don't leak from one breast anymore while feeding from the other so I can't help you there - but I'm only wearing them in the evening (can't really wear them to work - they look mighty funny!) But they've been a godsend for me.
I had a set (not Avent) and I would wear them all day for the few days I needed them. I remember one day collecting about 50 mL, make sure you have them in the non-feeding side when the let down happens. I would take the milk out every hour and put it in a bottle in the fridge.
Cheers
