View Full Version : Scared of rain?
:o
DD is now 3.5 (4 in Oct) and she will not sleep through rain, she cries chucks tanties, and says I am scared :ecomcity:
We have been letting her come into our bed, BUT as winter has just begun, and we have baby on the way this is not ideal.
Any ideas thoughts on how to fix this? Or does it end??????????

Our little boys turns 3 in Augand goes hysterical when he is in the car and it rains or if anyone is standing in the rain. My little boy is cared of alot of things. I just cuddle him and explain to him what is going on if he gets comforted and knows youa re around he is fine.

Considering a lot of adults tend to run for shelter the minute it starts raining, it's no wonder that some kids think it's scary!
There are a few things you an do with them to help, including actually walking in the rain (gentle rain) and getting them to feel the droplets on their face and hands ("catching" rain with their hands, or catching the drops in their mouth). The other thing is to talk about rain and what it is, and how rain is nature's way (or for the religious, God;s way) of watering all the trees and washing the earth clean ready for the next sunny day to make it sparkle). If it's particularly noisy, you can play a game of thinking of other things it sounds like... whooshing wind, a desk fan, the rangehood etc... all other "white noise" kind of noises. There's loads you can do to make rain a fun thing and less scary. Even some water play where you experiment with a watering can "raining" on various surfaces so show that sometimes it can be noisy and sometimes not, and roofs are noisy.
my ds was the same he was absolutely terrified for a few yrs. he is 5 and a half now and he isnt really scared anymore and would never wake from his sleep. he is a bit scared and tries to convince me to let him sleep in my bed though if its storming or raining really hard when he goes to bed. for him it was about the noise of it, he wasnt scared of actually being out in the rain. i just always comforted him and let him in our bed.as he got a bit older 4ish? if it was very light rain id start insisting no it isnt that bad u can stay in your bed which he wasnt too happy with and id end up going in and out 10 times anyway but eventually we got the point where he would only come in if its thunder and lightening.
My 8 year old has just grown past fear of storms in the last few months.
8 years of holding her on my lap during every storm and heavy rain.
even when it was spitting she wouldnt go out in it
if it rained when were in the car she would scream
she was scared so bad during one storm she passed out for 20 mins..
Hmm she loves the rain whilst awake, just not while sleeping, or will not go to sleep if it is raining.
I think its the tin roof :( I just wish she would sleep making life very hard at the moment...
could u try putting on some music to try and cover the sound of it a bit? my son was the same just at night just the noise. leave lights on doors open, try and get something a bit distratcing like a lava lamp to be only special for when it is raining ..
or even one of those light things babies have..u know they project stars n stuff around the room and play gentle music? just something to try and distract from the rain noise and also make raining almost a fun special time when the light only gets used
Hmm might have to look into a projection thingo...:detective:
