Sounds kind of gross - but someone told me that the brown strip down along the back of prawns is poo! Is it? I've always eaten it, but now I know what it is I'm not sure if I plan on putting that in my mouth...

Do you eat it or remove it?

Yeah I was told that it was thier digestive tract, so I have always removed it as I always thought it was poo too, :barf:Cant imagine eating it!

yep, it's the digestive tract so technically poo. i like how some people refer to it more diplomatically as 'grit'.

I remove it, but it won't hurt you if you eat. Many restaurants never remove it. The thought of eating it is a bit :barf:

I'm sorry Nemosmum - I didnt mean to put you off your dinner. Its just that I had prawns for dinner myself tonight and was wondering how many people remove the 'waste' before eating?

always devein them.

many years ago when I was holidaying in Port Douglas my girlfriend and I went to a local fish n chip shop and I asked the guy do they devein the prawns as I wanted prawn cutlets and he said "yep we blast the sh*t right out of them" - so there you have it......:laughing:

I remove them - I also don't usually eat the orange bit in scallops that the fish shop leave in ...

I don't feel so bad about the ornage bits now knowing what it is but you're welcome to them Easterlily LOL though my BF or the cats usually end up with them lol Its just something about the texture lol

Eeeewww no POO!!!

My Italian friend eats the whole thing - poo and all and then she sucks the goop out of it's HEAD! So disgusting I can't bear eating prawns with her!

I never ate the vein, but I discovered several years ago what it was and now I am extra careful to remove all traces of it!!

DH cares not a jot & eats them poo & all!

At least he is usually good enough to peel & devein my prawns for me when we have them! :thumbsup:

If i did eat prawns (:barf: ), i wouldn't eat the vein.....DH eats them, and come to think of it, i don't recall seeing him de-vein them....yuk!

I dont eat prawns but I know at xmas when I watch my cousins eat them, they always take the poo tube out.
