View Full Version : When Good Little Boys Get Stubborn

My DS, aged three and half, is an absolute treasure and like most little boys melts his mothers heart on a daily basis. He is a lovely, considerate, kind and gentle soul.

For the last week or so, he has refused to blow his nose. He can do it, and he can do it very well, it is just that he chooses not to. He sniffs, wipes snot up his sleeve or my personal fav, he drags the palm of his hand down his face, only stopping to dig two fingers into his nostrils and dragging the snot into his mouth. Revolting.

I have tried everything with him, time out, begging, reasoning, I cleaned his bedroom right out, took away his night lamp. I even put his beloved Florrie Fimble and her friend Fluffie (which is a toy bunny sewed to Florrie's hand) in the bin. All with no reaction - there was a brief period of tears, but Florrie is still in the recycling bin. (she is inside several plastic bags).

Should I just let it go? It is doing my head right in. I hate being cranky with him, about something relatively minor. I wouldn't mind if he wasn't snotty and didn't have a cold. He would feel so much better if he just had a bl**dy good blow. I know he can do it.

Hmmm, do you know why he doesn't want to blow?

What if you went to the store and bought him his own grown up boy handkerchief? That way he could actually collect the snot and it would be like a fun game... just kidding.

But would buying one encourage him?

Okay, just had a shower and the hot water dislodged a few ideas...

What if the whole family got together to "teach" DD2 how to blow her nose. In a circle DH blows his nose, then you yours, DD1 hers and then of course it's DS's turn. Then you could continue to get DS to "show" DD2 how to blow her nose whenever you want him to.

Is that a very bad idea?

Thanks LE, I have no idea why he doesn't want to. He was a bit chaffed under there from all the finger action, but that has gone.

The hankies might be worth a go, especially if I can find a Thomas or Bob the Builder hanky. Bob probably only does footy snots anyway and I am unsure if that would be a better alternative.

BJ - Thanks all the same.

Very good idea, but he is definitely just choosing not to do it.

Think I have to let it go. In the big scheme of things who is he hurting? He is not going to die if he doesn't blow his nose.

I have this problem with my DP if you get the answers please share them!

You could tell him that if he continues to eat it, then he'll get no dinner which does he want!

Just buy him a few long sleeved green shirts and jumpers.

If he's going to do it anyway, at least you won't be able to see it from a distance :D

..and think about it, if he's going to prove his independence on some front, it's much better being about nose candy than bedtime tantys or sticking things in powerpoints.

Very true. He did something last week that tripped the Safety Switch. I am still trying to work that one out.

Green is just not his colour.....................

Sop it worked I didn't cook for ages he got us takeaway...
oh and one day I saw him doing it and I thought I "tapped" his arm, "but apparently" I "rammed" his finger up his nose...so he doesn't do it around me much anymore fear of getting injured

Bit harder with a child.....I agree go with the green clothes lol
