Costs - Private at Mercy WA

Hi,
We are having our first bub in November at Mercy Hospital in WA. We have provate cover (HBF), but I was wondering if anyone can give us an indication of what additional costs we should expect at / around the time of the birth. :confused:

If you phone or email HBF they should be able to tell you exactly what to expect.

I had private cover with Medibank Private and delivered at SJOG Subi, which is a partner hospital with Medibank so I never had to see the bill. But some extras which I got hit with were:

- Pediatrician consultations, for the birth (caesar), follow up at discharge and at 6 weeks. Medibank only covered a portion of his "specialist" fees.

- Anaesthesiologist charges during the caesar. Again because he was a specialist only a portion of his fees was covered.

The two specialists billed directly, not through the hospital. If it had been through the hospital the total fee might have been lower. Best to phone the hospital and have a talk with them. The hospitals are generally very up to date with the health insurance policies and will be able to give you a breakdown of what's covered and what's not.

I agree about phoning or emailing HBF.

I had private cover with SGIO health and delivered to at SJOG Sub which is a partner hospital with SGIO too. I saw some bills as my daughter was admitted into neo-natal for 10 days and was only released from hospital 12 days after her birth (thankfully she is okay now :) ). Thankfully with SGIO until the 30 April this year the anasthesiologist charges were fully covered by SGIO for the first baby. But remember some extra cost always creep up.

Including Pediatrician cost, things like medication you have to take eg pain killers from the c-section. Any other specialist cost ie obny-gyn cost, if you husband/partner decides to stay at the hospital unless its covered by your health care.
