View Full Version : Zofran-does it really work?
I'm pregnant with my 5th child. I've had morning sickness (correction, 24 hour sickness) with all my babies, but none as bad as this. I bring up most meals and can barely face cooking everyone's dinner as I bring up whatever's left in the process. As my nausea lasts til approx 15 weeks and I'm only 7 weeks, I dont want to put up with this for a further 8 weeks.
My obgyn has mentioned zofran. Of those of you who have taken it, did it really work?

Zofran has been my saviour........
I was sick with hyperemesis for about 13 weeks and ended up in hospital, Zofran and water has been my only hope. It can take a bit to get the dosage right but once you have it's great!
A word to the wise.... there is a generic version it's called Ondanstetron.... I pay $30 for 10 4mg tablets...... Where as Zofran is $80ish for the same ones :)
I am also still on it. I am now 19 weeks and have tried the last few weekends to come off it and just end up vomiting all day again...
I hope it makes things easier for you, you won't know yourself

It's used for Oncology patients to prevent there nausea from chemotherapy, my 3 year old has used it for a year to prevent her nausea caused by gut dysmotility so it should b brillant for morning sickness

Zofran is the liquid suspension form of Ondansetron... It also comes in Wafers and IV form
I had Hypremis for the entire duration of my pregnancy. I took the wafers from 10 weeks through to the day after she was born (39 wks 4 days). Initially I only took them with the thought the sickness would disappear by around 14ish weeks but it never did.
This was 2 years ago, glad to hear there is a generic version now as it can get very expensive. Although our health insurance covered alot of it.
Good luck, it really does work once you have the dosage right.

Ondansatron and Zofran are exactly the same thing so whichever you get is good and yes the generic is much cheaper. I also got it from my hospital pharmacy as opposed to an outside chemist and it was incredibly different in price so see if you can get a script from your maternity hospital if you have one.
It is used in chemo patients as a PP mentioned and is the gold standard in anti-emetics! If this doesn't stop you vommiting not much will!
It generally comes in tablets but as mentioned waffer form is also available. You pop it under your tongue and it absorbs straight away so if you vomit shortly after you won't loose the tablet too. Ask for the waffers.
Hope this helps, good luck.:flowerz:

I took it all through my 1st pg and am on it this time around too. It doesn't take all the nausea away but it does stop the vomitting so I'm able to eat normally after I take it.
I'm on the wafers and I get them through the hospital pharmacy - waaaay cheaper.
If you cant get them through the hospital get your GP to write you separate scripts instead of one script with repeats as this costs twice as much!
Did diddly squat for me. I just throw up until the baby comes out.
I have heard it works wonders for most people though. Good luck!
My kids just like to torment me both inside and outside my womb. LOL

Hi there,
I have been using Zofran for about 2 weeks and to start with it was brilliant because I could instantly eat again and the vomiting stopped. However over the last 2 days I have suddenly started vomiting again, and the nausea is back all day.
Did this happen to anyone else? I'm hoping its just my hcg levels peaking and it will go away cos I don't know what I will do with myself if things go back to the way they were before the Zofran:confused:

Not that I am an expert at all but I did have this.... I ended up in hospital even on the Zofran. It ended up being dehydration but they upped my amount of Zofran from 2mg every 12 hours to 4 every 12 hours. After the IV and rehydration I have been only taking 4mg every morning.....
Hope you start to feel better soon...

I had morning sickness with all 3 kiddies, but much worse with #3. Went onto Zofran and it saved my life!! Wish I had known about the cheaper option, it cost us a small fortune!!!!

I am 20 weeks with my 2nd child, and have had Hyperemesis this time around too. Took Zofran wafers in 1st pregnancy right up until the day I had her. Started taking it earlier in this pregnancy, but it didn't take the nausea away, just helped me stay out of hospital as much (still needed to go on IV fluids about once a week) Once I reached 15 weeks, things dramatically improved, and have since tried coming off the Zofran, but with little luck (the vomitting came back) so it definately does work! Was costing me $200 a week, but have been able to cut back the dosage now, so only costing $50 a week. It is truly a life-saver. Hoping it works for you and sending hugs as I know how debilitating this is.

Wow I've never heard of Zofran. Is it Category A medicine? i'm on Maxoline at the moment to try and help me with my morning sickness. Only lasts about 1/2 an hour max then it's back again as violent as ever.

It's category B1 ("Drugs which have been taken by only a limited number of pregnant women and women of childbearing age, without an increase in the frequency of malformation or other direct or indirect harmful effects on the human fetus having been observed. Studies in animals have not shown evidence of an increased occurrence of fetal damage.).
I took it from around 14 weeks until the day I delivered and while VERY expensive (thanks for the heads up on the generic option!) it saved me (in more ways than one) and there doesn't seem to have been any ill effects on my baby :)

Zofran is wonderful stuff. I got sneaked a couple of doses while I was in hospital after my op last week. I was throwing up because of the morphine and the maxalon stopped me from throwing up bit didn't take away the nausea whereas the zofran took away the nausea for most of the day.
What annoys me is unless you're going through chemo, pregnant or allergic to maxalon and stemitel you can't get it on a PBS script. Theres no way I can aford the $10 a wafer so I'm stuck with things that just don't work. Sux big time.

The first time i had it through the IV I was 5 1/2 weeks pregnant (although I thought i was 7weeks), and that was fine.
I am not sure what is the 'normal' dosage...but I was on 4mg morning and 4mg afternoon with DS. Then with the twins, at one stage I had 24mg through the drip every 24hrs (8mg per 8hrs) and i was STILL throwing up a little bit, just not as much, that was when i waking through the night to puke. For the first part of the pregnancy i was on 16mg per day, then weaned to nothing by the end, but with DS i was on a 4mg tablet until the end. It was deemed that what i was taking was 'safe'. HTH.
Thanks for all your replies. I am seeing my obgyn this Thu and at first I was excited because I'd finally get a scan to see if the baby's ok, but now I'm excited because he's promised to give me Zofran.
I also had gastro on top of the regular nausea and vomiting this weekend. I dont think I've ever felt so sick. Even fruit1 came up. My Dh insisted we have a day out in the city. I kept thinking that I'd rather a day in hospital
Now its school holidays and I'm on my own with 4 little kids and this nausea. I think I might just run away....

Hi boygirlboygirl
I truly hope that by now you feel much better:hugs:
With my first pregancy I tried many, many remedies, and Zofran was a life saver - I wish I had known about earlier! I was on 3 x 4mg wafers a day, and could finally function again - I hope it is working for you as well.
I am 6 weeks pregnant with #2 and had to start taking Zofran again already.
A quick question though on getting your presciption filled through a hospital pharmacy: can any one tell me how this works (I was in the US for my first pregnancy) - I am seeing a 'private' OB in Brisbane, and her offices are not at the Hospital. Many thanks.

I think you can only get it on PBS is when you have a cancer diagnosis.
It wasn't on the PBS when I had hyperemesis in 2007, but since my breast cancer diagnosis this year, I was prescribed Zofran for the chemo (since I have overly sensitive nausea triggers  according to my oncologist) it was much cheaper.
