Girls check out the Today Tonight program Tonight (Wed 22 june)
A 14 year old girl is on who decided she wanted the $3000 from the Govt when you have a baby so she went out and got pregnant to get it.
They had a quick bit of the story on before the show finished and some of her responses made me mad.
If you can check it out.

Well not having seen it and not wanting to jump to too many conclusions, it sounds like she was just careless and got in trouble and she (or her parents) are now trying to shift the blame to someone else...

We don't get Today Tonight where I live.....such a nuisance as this story would have been interesting. I hope the girl realised that $3000 would only last her about 2mths.

 ...kind of amusing... does she realise that the baby will actually require a few things? A cot perhaps?... a pram... some clothes... nappies...
And then cost her money for the rest if its life??

My husband and i are trying to attempt for the 3rd time this year, i think 3000 would only cover part of our bills by the time we get there and if we could have a baby we would pay double that.
As you said i hope the baby is well loved and taken care of.
Today Tonight do have a reputation for clipping bits of interviews to make the story more dramatic and seems as it hasn't even aired yet - I think it would be a bit premature to judge just yet.

Apparently it aired last night. But I have heard that their editor gets a little trigger happy and leaves things out.

I know! On the ad this girl said that she had her baby because she needed the money - she obviously had no concept of how much it costs to raise a child.
Sadly these types of people are usually the ones who then neglect their children or the poor kids end up being abused by their drop-kick boyfriends. So sad and makes me absolutly furious. I'm not sure if I'm going to watch it tonight ot not - it might just make me too angry.
If she puts the baby up for adoption after getting the money... is that possible? Just wondering if there is a way that this could get really bad.. I will have to watch.

she looks like an idiot...sorry but she does..what does she think 3grand is really going to get her??? :shame: are there really people out there that clueless:confused:
Soooo not going to watch it, Today Tonight have this talent for getting the biggest bogans they can possibly find and making these big stories out of them. I mean its one silly teenage girl, she hardly represents the vast majority of teen mums. why cant that show ever show some real news?

Can't let the truth get in the way of a good story now can we! They do that all over current affairs and news programs.

I can't help but wonder if she grew up having everything she wanted given to her. It sounds like she doesn't know the value of money and how far it will go (or wont go).
In either Taht's Life or take 5 this week there was a story about a 14yr old who got pregnant. That girl is much more mature than this 13yr old is coming across as.

OMG this made me so furious, its so unfair that there are so many woman out there who are TTC who have secuirty and stability and cannot easily concieve, and there are teenagers out there who go and have one night stands and fall pregnant easily just for $3000, please someone agree with me that this is ridiculous :banghead:
The main girl in this story doesnt even have her daughter living with her, she said it was cos she didnt have a house and couldnt rent one yet cos she is only 17, but she is living with her mother, why cant her baby live with her?
arrrrrrrrrrrrggggggggggggg!!!!!

I totally agree with you.
If the baby isn't living with her, who has custody??

rather confusing story - it said she was a 14 yr old that got preggers for the $'s. During the interview it said her baby was 12 mths old and then she mentioned she was 17. So she must have turned 15 shortly after falling preg and must only have just turned 17. Besides all that confusion.........
she then mentioned that 9 out of 10 of her friends deliberately fell preggers to get the $'s. Don't know whether she was exaggerating that figure or whether she literally has that many teenage friends in the same boat as her. In any event what an outright stupid motive for getting $'s. Don't they realise that that $3k handout is a drop in the bucket to what they will need for the next 16 or so years. The sad part about the sorry story was that the girl realises after the event that the $'s are all gone and she still has the baby and she is in a fix with no money, no permanent place to live with her baby etc. What a way to learn a lesson.
There was another lady on there who had a little baby and a teenage daughter. The teenage daughter and her boyfriend wanted to have a baby for the bonus as well. Fortunately she wasn't already preggers and her very wise mother suggested that teenage daughter and the boyfriend look after the baby so that they knew exactly first hand what was involved. That soon changed their mind and made them realise that $3k was certainly no motive to have a baby.

children are creatures of love and caring provided by parents
Not detterants!!!
:banghead:
This story made me sick.
I stand by my anti-teen pregnancy views, and this has only cemented it.
Every teen mum they interviewed on the streets was a no-hoper. Maybe not all teen mums are like this but THIS IS WHY THEY ARE TREATED THE WAY THEY ARE.
Maybe the baby bonus should only be given to mums over a certain age, if it is now creating a teen pregnancy epidemic in Australia. These girls are just breeding a whole new generation of no-hopers.

I have to disagree. I have known alot of people, brought up in foster homes, abuse, seriously no hope, and they are now IT Managers, in the army with high ranks.
You can judge the mothers/fathers but I dont think its just to judge the children.
there once was a generation not too long ago that mothered in there teenage years mostly were our mothers mothers and i think a lot did a fantastic job.
ah yes back when women actually wanted to have children out of love, not wanted to have children for money. If you are having children for money it pretty much determines the childs future. This particular girl said she wanted the money to spend on herself (as I guess the other mums that are having babies for money want to as well), so I cant really see them placing a huge financial emphasis on their childs health and education in the future.
After watching that interview tonight, that girl couldn’t give a rats, she was immature and money hungry and worst of all it was all about her “pathetic” not that poor innocent baby which by the look of her is going to have a tuff life, the poor little thing, that ***s me  .
My grandmother had my mother when she was 18 but the times have changed big time since then.
I just wanted to grab :hugs: that little bub tonight and have her here at home with me and DH.

Oddly enough this is what DH said as well. He was shocked at the story as I was. We feel the baby bonus should only be give to mums say maybe 18 and above.

I do not think there should be an age limit on the baby bonus. There are a lot of young women out there, who have not fallen pregnant deliberately, but are doing the best they can in a bad situation. The bonus from the government, whilst not a huge amount, can go a long way for a new young Mum to get the necessary items for her baby. Ie pram Cot etc etc. Just because of the bad few, doesn't mean that younger mum's with the best of intentions for the $$ should be punished.

I agree with Brions_mum. You can't just say anyone under 18 shouldn't have children. I know some 17 yo's who are a hell of a lot more mature than most 22yo's.
IMO the bottom line is this - a child deserves and needs love and care. I don't care how old or young you are, as long as you can provide this then you are fit to be a parent. No, i didn't put security up there because at one time, not so long ago, DP and I looked like losing everything. Does this mean that we shouldn't be allowed to be parents? And on the same topic of security, are you saying that ppl who have to stay in shelters and women's refuges shouldn't be allowed to have kids because they have no security to offer their kids?
I do think security is a great thing to have, but I don't think it's the 'be all and end all'
I personally feel instead of just giving out $3000 it may be a better option to invest in educating these younger mothers in motherhood after the fact hence providing them with resources to deal with motherhood as much as possible.
For example should a girl under 18 get pregnant, have her sign up with a support group to help prepare her for what she's about to take on. Just giving out money is not going to help the girl in the long run.
In my opinion, 14 is a tad bit too young to raise a baby. Isn't 18 years the legal age to drink alcohol and to drive? What is the reason behind implementing an age restriction?
I am not saying anyone under 18 who gets pregnant should be penalised but instead be treated differently - have the girl take courses on motherhood etc. Not just throw the money at her.

Nearly all hospitals these days have a young mother's program to help them deal with impending motherhood and advise them on what to expect etc. Their are quite a few schools too that also have a parents program so the mums/dads can still get their high school education.
I believe the education you are talking about Jacinta is already available to the parents. So why shouldn't the under 18's get the baby bonus????? Remember alot of us out there use the baby bonus to buy items for the baby so why should a mother under 18 have to struggle to buy the items when the govt gives the money to everyone else, that is really not fair.
As for the age limit on drinking etc being 18. I think you will find that has something to do with the fact that at 18 your brain has finished developing, by condoning the drinking under 18 you are leaving developing brains open to pronlems due to the alcohol!

Maybe for mums under the age of 17, the government should give them $3000 worth of baby equipement instead of the cash?
Age definately does not correlate with good parenting... you get drop-kick 14 year olds.. and you also get drop-kick 30 year olds (just look at the story of child abuse in the general forum... the dad was 31).
Granted being a young teenage mum or dad isn't an optimal situation, but I've known many young parents (still at school) who did a brilliant job providing for their children, whilst not only providing for themselves, but also educating themselves along the way.
It does anger me though, when you do come across drop-kick parents (of whatever age) and they treat their kids like ****... it makes me wonder why these people can breed so easily... and yet there are so many couples who struggle for years to have a single precious baby... seems ridiculously unfair

Channel 7 in general is notorious for "Special Reports" surrounding issues everyone feels passionately about. Usually it's a storm in a teapot.
Do yourselves a favour and instead of watching rubbish like Channel 7, watch Media Watch on ABC TV Mondays at 9:15. This will give you much greater satisfaction than any story Naomi and her team can slap together.

I would....but we don't get the ABC here either. Looks like I miss out on both shows, lol.

Maybe for mums under the age of 17, the government should give them $3000 worth of baby equipement instead of the cash?
Why not just give all of us the $3000 of equipment? Why should anyone over 18 have $3000 appear in their bank account and everyone else have a delivery truck pull up in the driveway?
I just think it's really sad and unfair that this one girl's story has made alot of ppl feel that 'teenagers' shouldn't be parents.
I didn't think babies should have babies either, and I used to be the worst for walking down the street and seeing all the young young mums pushing prams and thinking 'OH MY GOD!', but since having DS I have realised that every one of us are mothers, and age doesn't come into that at all. Geez, some of the ppl I see down the street are over 30, look dirty, swearing at their kids etc. Why should these ppl be allowed to have the $3000 and not the equivalent in baby equipment?
I just don't like to stereotype all young mums. JMO.
