Hi all,

My DD is nearly 10 months old and eating a wide range of foods (and loving it).

Just wondering how to go about introducting egg into her diet. Do I start with the yolk by itself first??? I have read differing things and just wanted some advice from you guys as to what you may have done and how you went about it.

Also my DD is loving being miss independent at the moment and I am having trouble getting spoon fed food into her. She loves her finger foods and attempting to feed herself but things like her cereal and yoghurt etc I am having trouble with.

Any suggestions???

Nic

I made her French toast with the whole egg when she was about 6 months old. Probably not the right way to go about things at all, I don't know why I did that actually, but we had no problems and have been eating eggs ever since.

From what I understand, though, you are initially meant to introduce the yolk first, either scrambled or in French toast or boiled and mashed or any way you want to introduce it, really, and see how they tolerate it. If they are ok, get them used to that for a bit and then slowly introduce the white - perhaps in an egg white omelette or something like that. Little bits at a time and watching for their reaction.

As for the spoon feeding, my DD started doing the same thing around 10 months (she's 11 months now). I didn't push it. I gave her a spoon and showed her how to use it, and she's picking it up well. But mostly I just give her finger foods now. She wants to feed herself so I let her. I think your little one is doing the same thing. After a couple of weeks you'll dispense with mushy food completely and just give her finger food. Since we started doing this, DD takes her porridge very happily from me in the morning, and takes yoghurt happily as well, and feeds herself everything else. Last night she ate baked beans one at a time with her fingers (it was hilarious) like such a little lady, and yes sometimes she likes to try finger-feeding herself yoghurt etc too. It's no big deal, I let her do it, it's teaching her how to feed herself and far easier to just let her do it than get into food battles. She eats a lot more, too, if I let her do it herself. No matter how much it breaks my heart that she is starting to do these things herself (lol) I always follow her lead and let her do what she's ready to do - even if it makes a big mess! :D

Kinda what Chesby said. I introduced just yolks around 9/10 months, as the recommendations for whites is not until after 12 months (I think). Apparently egg white is a common allergen, so if you have a history of food allergies in the family I would avoid it until after 1 at the earliest. If not use your own discretion I reckon.
