Hi,

I am due in a few weeks and have almost got everything for the nursery sorted. However, I still need to buy a chair suitable for breastfeeding. I haven't looked extensively yet but was wondering whether anyone had any suggestions of good places to buy a basic arm chair which they found suitable for feeding. I don't want to get a rocking chair (which most of the baby shops seem to sell). I live in Melbourne. If anyone has any suggestions I'd love to hear from you.

My advice is go to a furniture store like Super Amart or something and try out every chair :D
Make sure there is good back support as you will be spending long-ish period of time sitting in it and you need to be comfy.
Also, get yourself a footrest (like a Feetseat or something) to take the pressure off your feet when you are sitting.

Maybe try megamart or DJ's. I'd recommend getting one that's not too deep. I find that ones with big arms can be difficult to feed in because you can't move your elbows around. Then when baby grows, they can't stretch out enough.

Hi

We bought a recliner from Super Amart... It was $400  , but worth every cent! I don't recline it when I'm feeding, but it's great when Eleni needs a cuddle - we kick back and cuddle together in it... I have also snoozed in it when she was tiny - I would wake up 'cause I heard her crying and then when I'd go into her room she'd have gone back to sleep! I'd be too awake to go back to bed, so I'd have a doze in the recliner while I waited for her to wake up... The important thing to look for in a chair I think, are low arms... Eleni's legs kind of drape over the arms now she's bigger. I have trouble feeding her in the chairs they provide in the Parent's Room at my local shopping centre - the arms are too high...

Cheers!

IKEA - we got a basic rattan chair with padded cover ($75) that when you lean back in it rocks slightly, it is great, very comfy and the rocking motion is awesome. Highly recommended.

I just use my "normal spot" in the loungeroom. I have a nice armchair, with a side table next to it, on which I keep a supply of breast pads, a jug of water and a glass, a box of tissues, a nappy in case of chucking.

I never saw a need to have a chair in baby's room for feeding.

My advice is to wait until after you have begun breast-feeding so that you find out what is comfortable for you. In the fisrt couple of weeks I sat on a dining chair or office chair as I was able to keep my posture better, and then when feeding became second nature I could do it anywhere. I found as first time parents we bought all these things people said were fantastic, only to find they didn't suit us. And likewise there are things I have found to be God-sends, but others would find them to be unsuitable.

I never got around to buying a chair. And honestly I don't know where I'd have put it anyways since I wouldn't want to be relegated to bub's room all the time if it was there, but going out to the lounge was out of the question sometimes too (middle of the night). I agree with Norman to wait until you've had bub and figure out what is comfortable for you.

I would tuck myself into one end of the couch with a extra cushion at my back and one on the side too for support of my arm. The pillows were easier to adjust than a chair arm. If I sometimes wanted my feet up it was easy to do it.
