Hi all.
Well I had my first doctor visit for this pregnancy and did urine and blood work. I got a letter saying I need to make an appoinment to discuss my results, turned out I had a urine infection. Apparently I should be in some pain lol.
I was given antibiotics to take 3 a day for 5 days then give another urine test.

Now I was wondering, does it really matter that I have a urine infection while pregnant? I have had a few before and though I had been in pain for them, I went only once to the doctors and never have taken anythign for them.
So if I still have it when I hand the sample in, should I really waste another 50 dollars to go see the doctor??
I didnt even think it was safe to take antibiotics while pregnant......

Any advice would be great!!
Thanks.

It's important to treat it, as a urinary tract infection can contribute to premature labour.

A urinary tract infection is very dangereous during pregnancy which is one of the reason that they test your urine at every ob visit. As the PP stated it can trigger sympathetic spasms in the uterus and trigger early labour and any infection in the body left untreated can have the same result.

Amoxycillin is perfectly safe in pregnancy, there is much more danger in not taking them. If you are concerend and / or want to prevent this happenign again yuo cant ake cranberry tablets dailywhich prevent bacteria from adhering to the urinary tract (thus preventing infections) and there is also a product called "Urinary Tract Support" by Ethical nutrients which is a natural antibiotic without the side effects of antibiotics. You could also take a probiotic. All are availabel from most chemists and health food stores. They can be pricey-ish but I suppose worth it if it prevents extra dr visits and any other preg complication.

good luck:goodvibes:

Just to let you know I also had a UTI (urinary tract infection) and was in no pain, the doctor says that he sees it a lot in young girls that the first time they get a UTI they have no pain and don't even know they have it.

I guess it could be true if it wasnt my first. I tell you though I have just stopped my tablets for that 5 day period and Im more irritated 'down there' then before (wasnt at all before). Now I bet she is going to say I have thrush or something

Maybe it's not just for first UTIs, it was my first but could also happen for others :)

If you're itchy down below it could well be thrush as its often caused by antibiotics throwing the good bacteria out of kilter!!!
