hi my 5 week old also has a cold and i have a vicks vaporizer, i put vaporizer fluid in it, you buy it from the chemist, dont use eucalyptus oil in it as ive heard it wrecks them.
Other things ive been doing for my bub is putting vicks baby balsam on his clothes around the shoulder area and they say not to put it on their skin but i put a little bit on his nose, i aslo bought fess little noses saline spray and i squirt that up his nose and been giving him panadol oh and we put the shower on hot let the bathroom steam up and took him in there which helped a bit. I also get eucalyptus oil and sprinkle it on the floor of the room he is in and aswll as having the vaporizer on i have and oil burner going with eucalyptus oil in it. Hope that helps.
Good luck making your bub comfortable, hope she gets better soon, its not nice them being so young and having a cold poor little things

Yes, vaporiser fluid can be bought at the chemist. It's all we've ever used.

Great thanks for your help. I'm pretty much doing all of that but will try the eucalyptus oil on the floor and maybe a oil burner too. It's not nice listening to her coughing, poor little thing.

Have you tried using the FESS spray? It's saline drops you put in their nose and then suck out the mucous. I found it worked alright for temporary relief.
You can also get infant drixine drops to put in her nose to dry up the mucous secretions, especially overnight. If you stop the runny nose, you can help ease some of the coughing during the night.
We use euky bear for the humidifier. Our steamer has a little tray to put the oil on the top.
Or you can use some baby vicks rub. Put it on her back, chest, throat, and just under her nose to help ease her congestion.

I also have a hippo vaporizer...I put some vicks vaporub in the essence tray, it will turn to a liquid when the vaporizer is on and go solid again when switched off. My little girls would have a chesty cough also, I found it helped to put the top end of her cot on some phone books, since she is lying on an angle the phlegm is not constantly lying back onto her lungs/chest..hope i've helped :-)

I use Eucalyptus or lavender, sometimes I buy 'inhalant fluid' too.

I wouldn't use anything in the vaporiser, the steam is enough. I've done a bit of research and most of the active ingredients in inhalants only trick the brain into thinking the airways are more open by triggering the cold sensor nerves. My doctor advised me to avoid them altogether as some children are sensitive to the ingredient and it can make the problem worse. Also, its just the steam that clears the congestion.
As for her runny nose and cold, try elevating her cot with a pillow underneath the head of the mattress, use the saline drops and suction out her nose (they hate it, but it works wonders) Fess brand do drops and a bulb syringe pack that you can get at the chemist. If you need to, take her to the doctor.

I use eucalyptus (and I still have a working vapouriser that is 20 odd years old!!) I find it breaks the mucus down
i use vicks vaporiser stuff in my vaporiser. also the fess nose drops and the 'snot' sucker are good, used them a lot. plus the baby balsam on her chest and also on her feet......sounds weird but last year on here there was a thread about it and apparently if you rub it on the inside curve of your little ones feet and put to bed with socks on it can help clear their noses too...........not sure how it works but can't hurt

As babies I used eucalyptus oil. As they got older, I switched to Vicks Vapour liquid. I didn't realise that the inhalants only trick the brain, very interesting :detective:
