Has anyone else experienced excessive hair loss after pregnancy? I've got a bald patch right where my hair is parted and everyday my brush is pulling more and more hair out! Is this normal? My mum reckons its a vitamin defiency?

I did after DD4 and my dr told me it is called: Telogen Effluvium.. caused from the stress my body was under from the big bleed after the birth. I think though the less extreme, more common is just one of those things which is called alopecia.

Yep - it's quite normal to shed lots of hair for the first 4 or so months. I think you shed less when preg and then make up for it after the birth.

Oh, I had something similar. No bald patch but hair coming out by the handful. I was told that it was those pesky hormones. Apparently you don't lose much hair at all while you are pregnant but once the hormones start to drop you return to losing hair except that, for awhile it's kind of excessive (to make up for what you didn't loose while pregnant I guess). It settles down after a couple of months. It was horrible cleaning out the drains after each shower though.:)
Your doctor might be able to explain it better than me though.

I agree with the 2 PPs :) It's normal to lose hair after the birth of your bub, especially around the front and sides of your head. Don't worry - it'll grow back (I have 'wings' ATM to attest to that! *sigh*)

:yes:Yep I lost heaps with DD I had longer hair and when I pulled it into a pony tail I had a noticeable receeding hairline esp at the temples :hissy:but it did grow back.:smiliedance:
DS is 15 weeks tomorrow and I am starting to loose a fair bit of hair I am hoping (possibly in vain) that it will be less noticeable with short hair.

Very normal. Partially hormonal I think. I remember about 4 months after birth was the worst time for me. I was constantly filling the shower drain with hair!

Yes ... this is completely normal and your hair will grow back.

I have fine hair but a lot of it. So whilst I lost about a basketball in hair it didn't make a lot of difference.

Now when I have my hair up you can see where all the new hair has grown back it's shorter than the rest.

I went and got a different haircut recently and it made a world of difference to disguise the new hair growth which is kind of funny.

Don't panic hon - you're hair will grow back.

What happens during pregnancy is that it stops falling out naturally so when you stop breastfeeding (usually) that hair that would have fallen out starts to fall out. It felt like mine was falling out for about 6 months!

I actually kind of like my hair a bit thinner, I get less hair headaches ... but it is growing back and will be back to normal soon.

Your's will go back to normal too. Go visit the hairdresser and they'll give you a haircut to accomodate that until your hair starts growing back. :hugs::hugs:

If your very concerned, I would get your thyroid checked.. As this happened with my sister and since giving birth (3.5 years ago) she now has a underactive Thyroid.. The first signs was that her hair was falling out in clumps :)

Thanks everybody... I was freaking out a little bit... ok a lot. :o DP pointed out to me today that my hairline where my part is is receding quite a bit! And it was really obvious cause I was wearing a hairband.
I have always had thick unruly hair so its so weird having thin limpy hair! And I finally got it so long its down to my waist and it's all falling out :(

I think I will go to the dr anyway and get my thyroid testing etc... just to be safe.

And mine is growing back curly

oh I love curly hair! :D

My hair started falling out after about 2-3 months. Hair is everywhere in my house... driving everyone nuts lol. I have been told it is a combination of stress, hormones and breastfeeding. It will get better. Hang in there.
