Stupid Question??

Ok This is my first baby and he is 10 months old , he has just gotten his first tooth it pooped through the gum about 2 weeks ago and he didn't fuss about it at all but NOW the tooth is half way out clearly out and visible he has been soooooo whingy and wont sleep or eat anything.
My question is shouldn't the tooth only hurt them when it actually pops out of the gum? not after it has already come out?
Geez I am not looking forward to the rest of teeth coming!

Maybe he has another one on the way through already. Most of DD's teeth came in 2's, and some she didn't even notice others she was in quite a bit of pain with.
