My DH has been offered a good salary position in North Ryde NSW. Can anyone tell me what this area is like?

schools?
Shopping?
Social Groups?
Crime?
Hospitals?
Transport?

any information would be great?

North ryde is a nice area. Ryde is pretty big but crime is low.

They have Macquarie centre fro shopping which is nice, and are in the process of building a new shopping centre which should be good, i think it will be finished by beg nxt year ( i hope)

There are no trains - you have to catch a bus to Eastwood then train it, but buses are everywhere and will take you to the city in under 20min if there is no traffic.

You can access the west, south or Chatswood really quickly and easily so its great if you like to eat out. It is also near Lane Cove national park so lots of lovely trees.

I knwo there is a hospital there, but not sure how the schools fare cos i dont know anyone with school age kids yet.

Hope this helps :)

Guess what Morry, I live like 5 mins from there!!!! I can babysit for you!

Okay so here is my thoughts, we live nearby, and my parents love the area, it's quite suburban but only about 20 minute drive from the city. It's a really well serviced area. It's quite young too, lots of families with little kids.

Schools:
- Great public schools, Kent Rd PS, North Ryde PS are well reputed and Denistone East PS is one of the best state schools (it's the dem. school for the area, where my brothers go, however hard to get into if you're out of area) and Ryde Secondary College, Epping Boys High School are the local high schools, Riverside Girls is in Gladesville, maybe a 20-30 min bus ride depending on traffic.
- A few Religious based primary schools - St Therese in Denistone, Northcott Christian School, St Michaels Meadowbank etc
- Close distance to many great private/catholic schools - strathfield/burwood has Santa Sabina, Meriden, Trinity Grammar Prep, MLC etc
- Right next to MAcquarie University

Shopping:
REALLY central...
- 5-10 minutes from Macquarie Centre which has Big W, Target, Woolies, Franklins, Grocers, Borders, Myer and heaps of speciality stores
- 15 mins from Rhodes which has Ikea, Coles and will have Target soon
- Top Ryde City is a newcentre opening end of year, it's going to have Big W, Woolies, Aldi and heaps of speicality stores too
- Meadowbank has frankins and an Aldi at the moment
- West Ryde marketplace has Woolies and butcher, baker etc

Social Groups
not sure on this one, though I do know there are heaps of Playgroups, there is a Scout group which my brother is a part of, not sure what else, but I think it's well serviced in that respect, I'm sure the City of Ryde website will have lots of info on it.

Crime
We barely hear of any crime in our area ever  and all feel very safe here.

Hospitals
Ryde hospital has an all hour emergency GP and such though it's not that fantastic for maternity.
20 minute drive to Royal North Shore Hosp and North Shore Private and 15 minute drive to concord hospital.

Transport
North Ryde Station has just opened up, is on the Epping-Chatswood line though you'd have to go to either epping or Chats to connect to the city
West Ryde station, Epping station, Eastwood station are all big transport hubs for the area, regular trains going from Hornsby-City, it's about 20 minutes to Central from West Ryde Stn. Ample commuter parking here too.
Heaps of buses too which go into the city.

Hope that helps! I love my area, when I have kids I would love to live around here - all the amenities and parks etc are well facilitated because it's in Bennelong which used to be john Howard's electorate so he sucked up to us big time - no aeroplane noise either!

The best thing is, you can look all around Ryde area, it's big but still everything seems local. Try Denistone, Eastwood, Meadowbank and West Ryde too  all a stones throw from Macquarie Park (is that where your DHs job would be?)

Agree with Forky - You could look into areas around it easily as well, everything is really close together and trains and buses are pretty decent.
Have lived near there for awhile but moved to newtown awhile back:D

Have friends that live there, they love it.

wow.. thats it i am sold!

thank you for all your detailed information.

DH has been pressuring me to move here for several months as his employer wants to move him into a position there.

i have never lived that far away from my extended family.

i would have to leave my teens here with their father too which is hard.

but it is a good offer and i am seriously considering it.

:hugs::hugs: how horrible to have to leave the girls :(

Would they consider coming if you moved?

Zel, I'll move your way once I've finished travelling and can afford to move out of home :p

Not the eldest, she is in her final semester soon of year 12. so she definitely would not be interested. my year 10 girl might. but she loves living with her father and has a boyfriend here. Bit hard competing with the 'men' in her life.

Hmmph. Tough competition.

Well when are you planning on moving if it goes ahead?

I have no idea. For me preferably finish the school year out here, but if it was sooner, may have to consider that too. be a shame for my year 7 boy though not to finish year 7 here.

Hi, Forkie gave you a great run down of the area! I moved to North Ryde 7 months ago and love it!

Just to add transport wise that it is SO easy to get into the City and out to the Blue Mountains due to freeways and tollways - it only takes us 15 mins to get into the city off-peak and 30 mins to the eastern beaches.

The train lines will be direct to the city from October I think (although take that deadline with a pinch of salt ).
