View Full Version : depo injection no good!
hi ladies
i have been on the depo injection for the past 3 or so yrs and i decided to finish it as im hoping to fall pregnant soon. i didnt get my last injection which was due on the 8th june, but my periods havent come back yet and ive recently heard some bad stories about women who have been on the injection and have not been able to fall pregnant until years later. im really worried that i mite not be able to fall pregnant as soon as id hoped. has anyone else had depo or heard any other stories about it?

Hi mumtobe... I was on the depo for over 4 years straight then stopped it and 6 months later conceived my youngest dd so it really didn't take that long as we were not actively ttc iykwim.

i was on depo for 41/2 years with very little periods during that time. after stopping my periods were really irregular - like they were before i went on the depo. it trook me 13 months after stopping the depo to fall pregnant but we weren't actively trying and my partner was away a fair bit for work during that time. they say that it can take up to 2 years for all the drug traces to leave your body and for everything to return to normal after stopping the depo.
good luck and keep trying
I got my period immediatly after ceasing depo, took 8 months to concieve, then I lost the baby and it took another 12 months to concieve my son.

I came off Depo in January 2004. Then I bled non-stop for 8 months. Then I went on the pill to stop the bleeding. I believe it sparked a hormone imbalance in my body which has only just been rectified by a week on oestrogen (progesterone made it worse). So there... that's my story.
All the girls I've known to be on it have had serious problems with it and I can't believe any doctor would actually prescribe Depo Provera to anyone given the number of women who experience problems with it.
I have just come off the injection two weeks ago. I have only been on it for a year, but have come off it cause it just wasnt agreeing with me.
I was also a bit worried about not being able to fall pregnant too. i think i will feel alot better when my period comes back

Any form of contraception can cause problems its different for every woman.
I actually fell pg just as i came off it without having a period first but then had one even while newly pg.
I had been on it for 2yrs or so (? cant remember hehehe :o )
Your doctor should have advised you of the risks etc or at least advised you to look into it before going on this or any contraception.
I was advised how i could possibly not be able to conceive for a few years after coming off it & thats why i had actually stopped when i did because we had planned TTC the following year so i thought it was best to get my cycle working etc first so that i could conceive when we wanted. Boof just had other plans LOL !
One of my friends even had her doctor refuse to give her the pill after her talking about wanting to TTC the end of the year because knowing that it could affect her chances so to speak which actually happened with my sister.
So i think any contraception can cause trouble & to varying degrees on each individual.
Good luck i hope all comes good for you :)

My best friend was on depo for 3 years, and she went off and fell within two months...
I think it depends on your body.
Good luck, :fingerscrossed:
I was on the depo needle for about 5 years i went off it in june got my periods back in november and was pregnant in December, although i have lost 2 babies this year will try again.
I guess it depends on your body as i had no problems with it.

i have been on the depo for 6 months and just stopped due to massive weight gain, but my dr told me i couldnt fall pregnant until i had my first period.. but you are proof of otherwise? i havent got my period yet and we've been doing a lot of the naughty unprotected... we'd be happy if we were pregnant again, i just didnt think it could happen!!

I had 3 shots last year and my last one was in Sept 06, I have only just got my period back and we have been TTC for 7 months now.
10 months is about normal to get your cycle back from what i have read, some women are lucky and it happens sooner, but between 6-12 is normally how long it can take to concieve after your last shot.
My best advice to you would be to start accupuncture ASAP...after all the firtility meds I have been on in the last few months that was the only thing that has got me back to normal and now feeling very confident about getting a :bfp: in June.
Good luck and PM if you want to chat more cause depo has really messed thing up for me so i can completely relate to what you must be going through:hugs:

I was on the Depo injection for about 2 years - no periods at all :smiliedance:
The month I stopped it AF came back 3 weeks later, just like clockwork.
In theory the drug that suppresses ovulation is not stored in your body - that's why you need a new shot every 3 months. So in theory as soon as you stop taking it your body will start heading back to what is normal for you.
Mine did, but I have heard anecdotal evidence from others that say that that wasn't the case for them.
ETA: The medical advice bit of paper pretty clearly states that your fertility can take between 6 - 12 months to return after coming off the injection. That's also pretty normal for regular, garden variety TTC anyway.
