Hi,

My husband really likes the names Ella and Ellie, but I'm concerned that they are too popular. Do you think they are too popular?

I really like Ellie and wanted it before my little Abigail was born but my husband kept thinking of Ellie May Clampet and could not get past it. I don't know that many Ellie's you can get on to Births Deaths and Marriages and can get a list of the most popular names.

i think ella and ellie are pretty popular nowadays. i am always seeing them in the birth anouncements. i personally only know one ella.
but my little girl is elliot which gets shortened to elli. we like the name elli but opted for elliot to make her that bit different! :)
good luck in choosing a name, its such a hard decision.

I have an Ella, and the baby two doors down from us is an Ella, and the second most popular name in Qld last year was Ella (there were 323 babies registered with the name in Qld!!) but we still love it, don't regret it and don't care that other people also love her name enough to give it to their child. A friend of ours is going to call her baby Elle (and pronounce it Ellie) and we still don't care - we think that the kids will know who they are no matter how close their names are.

What I have found is that it doesn't matter how common it is, it is still a lovely name for a gorgeous little girl and will grow with her into womanhood. So if you like it - use it!!

If you are interested the Qld website for names for 2004 is http://www.justice.qld.gov.au/lawweek/names.htm

I am a primary teacher, and in my 9 years of teaching at two girls' schools, and one co-ed school. In all of those years, I have taught one Ella and no Ellie !

Both names are lovely - when my husband and I were choosing names, the name Hamish just stuck ! We were deciding between many names, but kept coming back to that one ! I am sure you will wake up one day and say "I know which name I prefer". Take your time ! It is worth it to have a name for your child that you really like, AND that you can imagine them being happy with throughout their lives !

Enjoy the process !

Hi my DD is due on the 8th of November and we have decided on Ellie for her name! When I was first pregnant we liked Ellie for a girl and we hadn't heard of many and now it seems like they are everywhere!!Ellie does have a very special meaning for us so we are staying with it.And yes her Pop already calls her Ellie May (he's a bit of a hillbilly so it's kinda cute  ) I think if you really like a name and you can see your daughter/son growing up with it then do it!

Thanx Draught for the link!

I love the name Ella! I think they are both very pretty names and to be honest, i have never met any Ella's or Ellie!

I wouldn't worry too much about it being a popular name as they all come around eventually!
