Hi Ladies,
This is my fourth pregnancy and I've not had it noted anywhere that I can find that I had one previously so I'm just wondering as I went for a dating scan a couple of weeks ago first time I had to have an internal and it says in the letter with the findings I have a retroverted uterus.

Now from a little google I've found out some info and it shouldn't be a problem pregnancy wise so I'm not worried about that but I'm going back on Friday afternoon and am wondering will drinking the 1L of water actually do anything so they can see better or am I better off just drinking a bit (say half just in case) and expect to have another internal scan? I did kind of ask if I should expect another internal but the kids were being noisy and the lady couldn't hear me too well.

Can anyone shed some light on this for me?

TIA:flowerz:

ETA: by my previous dating scan I'll be 8 weeks tomorrow not sure if makes any difference or not?

Technically drinking water wouldn't do much as it won't push up the uterus like it would if you had a anterior uterus

but in saying that, at around 12wks the uterus actually corrects itself, as bub grows it moves up with it, so would be near enough the same shape anyways

so I would drink the water, as much as you can handle, if you've drunken too much or they don't need your bladder to be full, they will just get you to go to the loo half way through (i've done that a few times)

BTW I can't believe your 12wks already, only seams like it was the other week that you announced it

Sorry Jo, I'm only 8 weeks. I know it corrects around 12-15 weeks that's why I'm wondering. :)

I have a retroverted uterus too. I would drink the water as it might be enough to push everything up plus as PP said your uterus may have corrected itself by then.

I have often had a full bladder for scans and if they cant see what they need they will ask me to empty my bladder and do an internal.

I had an internal at 7 weeks but my 12 week scan was external and there were no issues with seeing whats going on.

Good Luck.

I have one, and for the first scans before 12 weeks, I needed an internal scan done. However, I went to the scan with a full bladder, let them have a try and then got told to empty it and have an internal. So I would go intending to have a usual scan and go from there.

As Eleroo said, it usually tilts back into "normal" position by 12 weeks, and definately by 20 weeks, mine didn't till the 20 week scan, and at 12 weeks was still firmly retroverted, but the sonograpgher was skilled enough to not have to do the internal scan.

Good luck with it :D

Sadly after three kids full bladder for me these days is nowhere near 1L:no: I was almost peeing myself at just over 900mls last time:o so I'm thinking about 600mls should be 'full' for me (I have a mild prolapse and currently have a UTI so I don't think my bladder will have recovered fully by Friday so that I could have 1L even if I wanted too. LOL)

As I said I am only 8 weeks so hence my wondering.

Anyhow I will go with a full bladder and see what they say. Must remember to pack toys for the girls again so they are distracted from anythign happening under the sheet. LOL

I couldn't hang onto 1L either, I had 500mls and was even told it was too full  Then my bladder clamped up and I needed a cathedar to drain it  I literally COULD NOT GO.

Anyone who makes you drink a litre is evil

oh good, I thought I was missing a few weeks of my life there lol

ummm as this is #4, I would only be drinking what you can, def not the whole 1lt, you won't make it to the scan

I dont blame you...I struggled to hold 1 litre before falling pregnant, let alone now.

After 3 kids I think you should just drink til you feel full.

I've got one, and have never yet had an internal, including an 8 weeks scan and a post partum scan. they do want you to drink the water though, and get grumpy if you haven't. :)

Thanks girls for putting my mind at ease about the water, I'm glad I'm not the only one unable to drink 1L of water.

little fish - Having had three previous pregnancies which included a number of scans each, especially with my first, I am aware they can get cranky when you donn't drink enough water that's why I thought I'd ask on here as I don't believe I previously had a retroverted uterus. Also from my understanding and looking at anatomy pictures the uterus when retroverted doesn't sit over the bladder at this early stage of pregnancy but much more over the bowels which of course drinking water wouldn't help at all. As I said I will make my bladder full and see what happens from there. :)

Jo - I'm sure everyone elses pregnancy goes faster than my own do, so I always feel like saying no you only just told me you were pregnant and suddenly you're huge. LOL
