Hi everyone..

My little man who is now 16.5 months old is happy to go to bed during the day for a nap and to sleep at night.

This hasn't always been the case... he's a rather spirited individual who at first would always put up a fight at sleep times. The past 5 months however (after much perserverance, love, patience & consistance) have been so much easier..he's in a routine and as I have just said is happy to go to bed....EXCEPT most recently he has taken to staying awake for ages in his cot, muttering away to himself before falling asleep. Yes this is normal & healthy..but he can stay awake for up to 2 hours!!! My hubby and I laugh sometimes when we can hear him playing in his cot..I've even thought that one day/night I'll go in his room and won't find him there as he's probably dug himself half way to China...

Anyway all I suppose I'm asking is..is there anyone else with the same problem......is it a problem? Today I put him down admittingly a little later than usual for his arvo nap..and he stayed awake for 1hr 45mins before falling asleep. He was contented the whole time..didn't cry..just lay there chatting to himself

He does have a soft toy he goes to bed with, and that is all..his bed is pretty dark apart from a little bit of light that sneaks in on the side of his blind.

He WAS going to sleep within minutes of me putting him down. It might be a phase and stop again in a week..not sure.....it will be interesting to hear from anyone whose munchkin/s have done the same..:p

Hi MumO1,

Do not fear your munchkin is normal!

My 14month old DD does the same. Sometimes she will go straight to sleep, sometimes she will play in her cot with her doll, talking loudly and banging her dummy on her cot rail, etc, then suddenly its all quiet, and guess what? She's gone to sleep!

As long as they are happy and not distressed It's fine. Ngala (parent education org in WA). has also told me this too.

Also when he is taking VERY long to sleep it may mean he is overtired so maybe try putting him down earlier? I know thats what happens to my DD.

He sounds normal to me, we as adults lie there thinking away before we sleep sometimes, same with little people except they don't really know what to do with themselves until they fall asleep I guess?

Well hope my rambling has helped! :ecomcity:

Hi Cmd- thanks for taking the time to respond to my post.. you're so right about the overtiredness issue as I find he falls asleep sooner if I put him to bed on time..if I try and stretch him a little because we're out shopping etc..it takes him alot longer.. I figure he is struggling to wind down and relax. He's happy though which is good..he's not so tired that he's screaming the place down :p

I'm sure you'd agree that the noises that you hear coming from their rooms are very amusing at times..they sure do keep us entertained. There are moments though when I think to myself.."just go to sleep!!!" This is coming from a person who usually takes ages to go to sleep herself :D
