View Full Version : Saying 'ff' istead of 'th'...
Any tips on helping my dd (5) on 'th' rather than 'ff'?
eg. free instead of three
Heaff...Heath
Any ideas...
Practice the sounds together in front of a mirror. Say words that start with each sound and make sure she is watching your mouth too and trying to get her mouth to do the same, make a game of it, will be more enjoyable for her. Don't expect results overnight. It may take a few weeks or months even. Be patient.
Hope this helps.
I recently took my ds to a speech pathologist and she remarked on how stupid it was to make one of the earlier sight words "the" as most kids don't develop the "th" sound until they are at least 7 years old!
I couldn't be worried if I were you ... it will happen when the time is right!
I used to tell DD where to put her tongue.. i'd describe it so she did it.
But I only did this because ppl would tease her (at the ripe old age of 2, 2 and a half...) so she got annoyed and asked me to correct her "th" and her "S" so it didn't sound like a "th"..
Maybe you should ask the bubhub member LitVoiceSP. She is a speechpathologist and seems really nice. She keeps offering advice to anyone who is concerned about their little one's speech.
She would know best!
But I wouldn't worry about it too much either!

Be careful about doing this. Mum tried to change younger bro's speech patterns at one stage - From th to tr (he had been saying things like thruck instead of truck....). Anyway - little bro ended up saying ff instead of either of the above (as in F....uck.
It was quite funny, but very embarrasing for mum! Be warned!

Don't correct his speach by saying something like "Its three not free" instead when he says something like "I've got free lollies" repeat it back to him by saying "wow, you've got THREE lollies"this way you are correcting him withouut correcting him (iykwim) then hopefully in time he will copy you, I wouldn't worry about it too much, children eventually learn how to speak and pronounce words properly it just takes time, also you could read heaps of books to him and if there is a word that starts with th make sure you say it clearly so he understands, but like I said, he will learn in due time.
Just rememered something: When I was younger I had a doctor named dr Wotski (not sure of the exact spelling) anyway, my sister and I used to call him Dr Waterski
My dd says "truck" with an F - very embarassing when we're sitting on a bus and she sees a truck out the window - "MUMMY!! LOOK BIG ****!!!" Makes all the little old ladies on the bus turn around that's for sure - she's only 2 and a bit!!
I do the same as mum2bubba and just repeat what she says with the correct pronunciation - "yes, very big truck". Hopefully she'll pick it up sooner rather than later....
Thank you all for your advice...somedays I am constantly correcting her... she definetly tries to copy me... just wasn't sure whether it was 'normal'...
I will do the repeating sentence technique & we might even have a little fun in fron of the mirror...she loves looking at herself!
I'm sure she'll grow out of it...by the time she's 21:laughing:

I definately think that all kids start off with the ff. and the ff for truck seems to be consistent. Outside my sisters house the booze bus would be set up all the time and nephew would stand at the windows going "oooh f..k" until we took him to meet the police. of course he would just stare at the cops saying ....
ooh f..k:thumbsup:
ya gotta luv em

My mum still says Firty Free and shes 51!! Unfortunately she lives at house 133. She gets teased all the time, in good spirits. I used to be the same until my older sister beat me into saying it properly. I dont reccommend that method!

I used to say 'ff' instead of 'th'. And my Mum left it alone. It was my schoolteachers who gave me hell for it. And to be honest, the more pressure they put on me about it, the worse it got. In the end, when I was 11, Mum told them to leave me alone, and by the time I turned 12 I had grown out of it. I believe that if Mum had of intervened with my teachers earlier, I would have grown out of it sooner. The more they tried to correct me, the more self conscious I became. So I tried to avoid words with 'th' in them. I still lapse evry now and then. Sometimes I even do the opposite, and say things like Ï got it three" instead of "I got it free" And if I have a few drinks, it becomes more noticeable! But I don't stress about it anymore. I don't think it's a huge issue.
