Has anyone else on Bubhub have a baby that dislocated hips at birth or that was picked up later, please share your experiences here.
My daughter was born with both hips dislocated, she wasn't breach and they aren't sure why, it was only just pick up by a junior doctor and the specilist couldn't pick it the first time took a while as when they touched her she stiffened up so they couldn't tell. She had a brace for 10 weeks and has been fine she is now 8 months and not crawling i am not worried but would just like to hear others experiences. Thank you

My DD was born with hip dysplasia in both hips. It was picked up at birth. I was kinda expecting it as she was breech and female. She had a von rosen splint on for 6 weeks (I was so worried because they told me she would have it for 3 months, but took it off early!). Anyway, I got a private ultrasound done to ease my mind and at 3 months her hips appeared normal, thank goodness :) Probably the worse thing about the splint was bathing her and the horrible chaffing rashes she would get. Poor love.
It's cute how when she first had the splint taken off she would still hold her legs in the splint position. I think she did it for about a month after it was taken off! LOL
Anyway, I know you are looking for parents who had children it was picked up later in, but thought I would reply anyway :)
Hi
My girl had dysplasia in both hips.
It was picked up when she was 6 weeks old and at the hospital paed said she was fine.
She was wearing Pavlic harness for about 3 month.
The first week was awful when she was placed in the harness, she was screaming and every time we hold her she would scream more as it was very tight fit.
One hip was totally out of place and the second was so so...
I do not know why she had it as she was not in breached position.
She is fine now but she won't roll she knows how to do it she just does not do it. She is 6 month old.
When the harness was taken off she was moving her legs non stop, like crazy:) even in her sleep so she learned how to paddle in the bath tub in a second:)

with the splint do they have to wear it all the time? Like 24 hrs a day?
with the splint do they have to wear it all the time? Like 24 hrs a day?
It depends
For the first two and a half month we did 24 hours, it was hard for her without a bath and it was so hot!
2 weeks after we were wearing it at night time only so we could bath her again:)

WE have just had a beautiful baby girl who is now 4 1/2 weeks old, at birth we were told she had a slight clicky hip and that they would scan it at 3 weeks of age......we were told it was a "Click" not a "Clunk" and not too worry.....we have just had our Paed call us to say the 3 week scan is back and she is refering us to a specialist as the hip joint is immature  and it needs looking at
did anyone else have this?
I'm so worried what we are going to be told.......I just want to be able to cuddle my baby girl......keep her close to me in the sling......hubby works away 3/3 am i going to be able to do this without him and look after my other 3 kiddies.....i'm really worried

:hugs:The only pain about the brace for we which really isn't that bad is you have to flannel wash them and it is slightly awkward to BF at first but u get used to it otherwise they adjust quite easily. i wouldn't worry to much as she is prolly young enought to have brace when they get older and it is detected they have to operate that would be worse don't stress to much till you find out, let me know how it goes you will be ok .
Totally agree:yes:
I was worried sick but it is not as bad as I thought.
The main thing is that the bub gets treated early and going to be just fine.
Yes, it is inconvinient but the bub would be getting better.
Do not worry and good luck!

you are not allowed to keep bub's knees together and in the car seat they are still apart:)

The only thing i am aware about car seats and braces is that you can't have then in carry capsule ones for very long as they don't fit as they grow bigger but that would all depend on the size of he baby to start with my lil or should i say big one weiged 9 pound 1 at birth and would of never fitted in a capsule with the brace at that size lol

Hey there,
Sounds like you guys are on the right track. Drs ect seem to be very onto it these days.
My husband had Hip dysplasia as a baby and the doctors didnt pick it up - fast foward 37 years and he has just had his 2nd hip replacement. He seems to be recovering well but now Im worried because our baby boy is due in 3 weeks and we have to get him tested.
Good luck everyone - thinking of you !!!

I was born with a dislocated hip (congenital hip dislocation) but it wasnt picked up til after 12mths when my parents noticed I was limping. It wasnt fixed til I was 18mths when my mum had my baby brother so that we could be in hospital together (I had to have surgery to get it fixed)
I seem to be okay, my hip clicks every now and then if ive been sitting for a while, and sometimes I get pains.
My DD had to be checked for it, but she doesnt seem to have it.

My daughter's clicky left hip was picked up 2 days after she was born. She was in a brace for 7 weeks 24/7. It was very hard at first, being our first bub and all. Bathing and changing nappies were the hardest part, and not being able to hold her close.
You will all be fine, we seemed to manage and good luck at the ultrasounds girls... I know you'll all get the right result :yelclap:
BTW my DD is 4 months old now with "perfect" hips.
I too am a bit concerned about developmental delays. Anyone else experienced these? My daughter hasn't started rolling over yet...

I just wish the appointment was today.....do you think waiting another 10 days to see the specialist will make a difference?......MM xx

Just rang them to try and get an earlier appointment....but no can do....fully booked. It turned out they didn't even have our appointment in their books, they gave it to someone else :crying: I broke down in tears on the phone...... i just want to know what we are facing.....so they managed to squeeze us in after a heated arguement with the receptionist.......It has been one of those days....MM xx

By immature I think they mean that it did not develop correctly in the womb. This can happen if the knees are not given the correct pressure from the uterus. The "ball" of the hip joint pushes against the "socket" to help it form.
With my DD, the ball of her hip joint did not place any/only minimal pressure on her socket, so her sockets were what they call shallow.
My DS was born with very shallow sockets on both sides and wasnt picked up until 6 months. After a lot of brace wearing and a bit of creativity in working out how to get things to work with a brace on, he is now 4 and has great hips.
We did however expereince developmental delays. He did learn to roll in the brace (i dont know how , it was the weirdest/cutest thing to watch!!) But we had a huge delay in weight bearing, standing and then finally walking. We had lots of physio post brace and yes some days it all seemed too hard. but two weeks before he turned 2 he walked and within a day he was racing around. Prior to that he 'walked' on his knees. But he found a way to do everything. it was very hard on the knees in his clothing though!! but in the end I am almost glad we went through his hip journey as it really made us appreciate every little milestone along the way, more than we perhaps did with our perfect hipped first born.
If hip probs are detected, it is quite an adjustment but it is ok. I did grieve the diagnosis a bit as everything seemed really hard at first, but we adapted and realised that it was not life threatening, and that there were much worse things our child could have to go through.
Feel free to message me with any questions as we had almost 8 months withe a brace and learnt to be very creative with adapting thiings to fit a brace.
I am now preg with #3 and this bub will have an ultrasound after birth to check because id DS had been picked up at birth, our journey would have been much shorter.
Goodluck, hope all is good, but if hip problems are detected, it isnt the end of the world. Easy for me to say for the other end of the journery I know:o

I have to jump in on this discussion. Four years ago our DD was put in a pavlik harness two days after she was born. She and I found breast feeding the most difficult and ended up working our that if I sat her up face to face with me it worked!:D She wore the harness full time and we were able to remove it after 8 - 10 weeks. She has had no further problems and even started walking at 9 and 1/2 months!:yelclap:
Hugs to all the Mummies who are dealing with this right now....I am thinking of you!:hugs:
