View Full Version : Never comes off the boob...?!!?

My 4 month old boob lover will stay on the breast indefinitely (as did my other two bubs)... since he was born I time 20 mins each side, otherwise he'd be sucking all day.

Last week I decided to leave him on the first breast for as long as he wanted, after 45 mins I had enough, pulled him off and put him on the second breast which he still chugged at for another twenty mins until I'd had enough of that experiment and pulled him off!

I'm looking fwd to this "baby gets more efficient on the breast and feeds quicker" business!
How do I get my bubs to go faster than 20 mins each side??? (and that's with me stopping the feed!)

DD was like this when she was born... drove me up the wall!

Hmm... are you sure he's actually feeding, or just comfort sucking? I could usually tell when DD was done cause when she was getting milk out she'd do really big sucks and I could hear her swallow. Afterwards she'd just nibble.

Thought about a dummy maybe?

Sounds normal ....

*ducks from the items being thrown*

Being that he is under 6mths he is still establishing supply so he will be happy to chug for hours lol ... Some get down to business quicker & learnt to establish quicker feeding patterns earlier but others tend to be happy to feed till pass out LOL.

Also remember he may still be going through the latest growth spurt so that could be another reason he is happily attached.

You could try to limit feeds but be careful as this could muck up your supply !

Things will more than likely settle in the months he starts solids & is happy to skip a feed here or there !

My DD was the same. I never limited feeds at all and she happily went on forever! She didn't really settle down until 6 months or so I think.

yeah he's defs comfort feeding... sometimes i can tell he's just using it as nature's dummy!
he wont take a real dummy.... he does the full dramatic choking and gagging affair... freaks me out!

ally - this is one LOOOOONG growth spurt! he's been hanging off the tit for 18 weeks now! LOL.

i just dont know what stage to pull him off if he's only comfort sucking... cos i figure he's still pulling milk in even at that sort of half suck?

he's growing fine, and putting on plenty of weight, so i think my supply is fine even with me taking him off after 20 mins each side (well i've been doing that since birth so that's what my supply is telling my body).

he feeds around 7pm at night, and sleeps til 3am... then co-sleeps with me and has the boob snack bar all night til the girls are up at 5 or 6 am...

i just want a baby that pulls off... for once! :p

If you want to reduce the feed time I guess th best way would be to do it really gradually - maybe cutting down by a couple of minutes one side, then the other until he and your supply adjusts?

I would love for DS to take a dummy too - I've tried every type and he also does the full-on choking/gagging thing!

I reckon if he's putting on weight well, and you've been taking him off after 20mins each side from the start, just stick with that  Let him go on to his hearts content if it suits you at the time, take him off other times. Long as he's happy in between feeds :) just my thoughts ! :o

Well he is a growing boy mum :p

Why would he want off when its the best stuff ever heh !

I dunno I suppose a dummy could be an option if you dont mind them & if you use it carefully so as to not mess with supply but it sounds like you are going to have to stick with taking him off ...

*ducks more flying objects*

You should be able to tell the comfort sucking from him feeding as once he has finished his gulping then you know iykwim ... Gosh does that even make sense LOL !

yeah i think you're right.
he happily goes 3 hours between feeds with me timing 20 minutes each side, and has a long sleep overnight.

hmmm... have started setting timer to 18 minutes! lol...

isaac was the same. he never actually pulled off himself when he was finished a feed when he was younger (probably because he was never finished ). infact i can only recall him voluntarily stopping a feed in the last few weeks!! he's 22 months.

up to a few months old he would feed non-stop for 4 hours in the afternoon/evening. i would swap sides every 30 mins to give my boobs a break. (DH had to cook me dinner :D)

as with all things...this phase will pass. :hugs:

oh my goodness!
that would never work here... i have three children to look after! leaving cuba on for three hours would be impossible! (especially being as he strangely doesnt seem to like slings at all :o)

Oooooh,...gotcha! Would help if I read the thread properly, eh?! Yeah,..Raff comes off at the end,....before he goes on again for the next feed,...then off,..then on again,.etc,.etc,.etc,.... Dunno what is worse really! If Q goes 3 hours between feeds,..and sleeps well at night (cow:p),.then you are doing a fair sight better than some of us!
