View Full Version : coughs again
I have read heaps of the other threads regading coughs and flus etc - but just wanted to get an up to date response and sort of confirm what I think I already know! My 5 month old has got a cough - sounds dryish and doesn't appear to be too much phlegm .
However he is a little off his food (suppose its hard to drink when your nose is a little blocked up) and is getting more tired easily - but for all other intensive purposes - seems happy. I have a vaporiser in his room - have rubbed bubby vicks on his chest and kept him warmly dressed..... is this all I can do???
From what I understand a trip to the GP would be a waste of money:)

A trip to the GP is probably a waste of time, but you should reconsider that if the cough sticks around for a while or bub gets phleghmy (sp?).
Because it's tiring for them to drink when stuffed up or feeling ill, be sure to offer extra drinks (breast, bottle or water).
You could always talk to a local chemist/pharmacist. There are some cough syrups for bubs. The labels almost always say to only to give to a bub so young on a doctor's instruction. I remember getting one for Chloe when she was about 6 months (without talking to the dr) and only gave her half doses (ie based on her weight but then I halved it) and only when her cough was really bad. And I only gave it to her for a few days - any longer and I'd have been checking with the dr.

My DD has just caught a cold off my husband and I and we are going through the same thing you are. She is off her food a bit especially solids, but I make sure she keeps up her fluids. She has a cough but not a chesty one, I rub baby vicks on her chest every night, keep her warm and rugged up and she has her vaporiser in her room nightly. If she does get a bit grumpy I give her some baby panadol and that seems to help her for a little while. I don't think there is much more I can do.
I thought it was a waste of time and money aswell taking her to the doctor. I will only take her if she gets worse or it won't go away.
Hope your little fellas feels better soon. :)
