My ds chose this afternoon to climb out of his cot for the first (and second!!) time ... the first time he was still in his sleeping bag!

We think that by definition he should move into a bed (toddler bed version of his cot) tonight (afternoon sleep was cancelled today), but my mum thinks that I'm over-reacting and there's no urgency.

What do you think? We've spent the last hour cleaning out his room to make it safer for when he is in a bed, but we can't find the allen key to change the cot around, so a trip to bunnings urgently may be required :(

DD climbed out of her cot yesterday too but hasn't done it since. I've been wondering when I should convert her cot to a toddler bed as well. I guess as long as he is still safe with it being a cot it's fine to leave it? If it's getting to the point you can't leave the room without him trying to climb out I'd change it too but move things around so that he can't get distracted by his toys when its nap or bed time. DD hasn't tried to climb out since. As long as I go in asap when she wakes up after her nap and in the morning she doesn't get bored enough to climb out lol.

Thanks for the reply.

We moved him into a bed last night at our house, but he's at my mum's 4 days a week (during the day) and she wants to keep using the cot.

Any thoughts anyone else?

Skye climbed out of the cot the other day too (for the first time) but she hasn't done it since. I keep watching her through the door but she doesn't climb out (she tries though) we are going to get her a single bed but not sure when, I am not really ready for her to go into one yet, only because I know once she can get out she'll just play instead of sleep, but we need the cot for the baby anyway.

If your mum wants to keep using the cot then there are two things she can do make it safer... drop the side so there's less distance to the floor when your little one climbs out, and put a mattress down on the floor next to it so there's a soft landing.

DD was quite agile and climbing out of (and into!) her cot for a few months before she got moved into a bed. It wasn't a problem though as she didn't seem to have any issues with it (I wasn't scared for her safety). If you think that it's dangerous, trust your instincts :) You know him best!

My brothers daughter started doing this at around age 2 and they took the front off the cot then put a roll guard thing on it so she didnt roll out and also to made her feel more secure. Its made for going on normal single beds but it fitted on the cot ok.
