just wondering if anybody is suffering from this or has had it? i cant remember what the proper medical name for it is though:o
the pain in my pelvis is absolutely excruciating, never had it with any of my prev pregs (im onto num 3)
advice would be appreciated! coz the doc told me if it worsens, then i will need complete bed rest!
Oh I had this with #2! Was so bad at the end of pregnancy I could barely walk and to get in and out of bed was complete agony, and to turn in bed, I screamed!
They would not diagnose me with Symphasis pubis disfunction (SPD) and brushed me off as just being a whinger. Kept pescribing me pain killers and sending me home. It wasn't until I went into be induced that I was diagnosed (bl00dy idiots!) and it was only because of the nurse that they did. She persisted with the Dr who had been treating me throughout my pregnancy at the hospital that it was NOT normal and that I would need physio for after birth. She said that it could have been eased by physio and a support belt (like that info helped when I was just 32hrs away from giving birth!) I'd ask to see a physio and get a support belt.
How far are you by the way?
Hi
Do a search on symphis public dysfunction, we've had several threads with great tips. You might need to look for threads that are up to 6 months old.

How far are you by the way?
im 36weeks :smiliedance:
Oh yes, unfortunately it's not gonna get any better.
But look on the bright side, you don't have long to go and once bub is born it usually goes away quite quickly. Mine was gone before she was 2 wks old. It didn't help that she was born weighing 4.13kgs! They think that would have contributed considerably.:fingerscrossed: your bub isn't as big.

im hoping shes not that big, but am expecting her to be over 4.5 kg:eek:
What the?!?!?!!! Why are you expecting that?

my previous 2 were just under 4kg all my measurements now are reading full term, my fundal height measurement has gone up 3cm in the last 2 weeks, this one is all babe , can feel her everywhere, docs saying could be more :gloomy:
Oh no! I hope not for your sake!
If it's any cosolation they told me Kailah was going to have a huge head as at 32 weeks the size was measuring at 36 weeks but it was only 34cm.
They can't tell that much by ultrasound, and fundal height I don't think has much to do with it. When I was pg with Em my fundal height always measured bigger she was 7lb and with Kailah it was always measuring smaller as she was so low all the time and she was 9lb 2oz!
I really hope you start feeling better. Some things I were taught in hospital were to try to walk taking very small steps and slowly and to keep your legs together as much as possible. When getting in and out of bed think of your body as a pandulum and swing your legs up together and keep you body srtaight so it is all in a line (am I making sense?)

lol some sense, although lately tryin to get out of bed is terrible, poor Dh has to assist me most times ;)
OK I will try explain better. Keep you legs together and push your body up with your arms and at the same time swing your legs slowly off the bed keeping them together until you are sitting up and then use your arm to push off the bed and stand. Do the same to lay down only in reverse.
Does that make more sense?

I had SPD with my last pregnancy. It was hell and it just gets worse as time goes on, sorry. But in the end my pubic bone had moved to much and I couldn't have a natural birth.:crying: The pubic bone was in the way. But after I had DD it stopped hurting after a little while and now there is no pain.:yelclap:
Hopefully you want get it this bad though.:fingerscrossed:
I have this and have the support belt, which sort of helps, but not that much.
Massage helps me a lot. The sort of massage that hurts, unfortunately, to get the knots out of the muscles because otherwise they spasm and that makes things worse.
So get lots of massages, the hurty ones!!
And warm baths.
I am very relieved to hear that it goes away quickly when the baby is born. My physio said to go back in 2 weeks after the birth and then 6 weeks after the birth so they can make sure the joints are lined up properly so it all heals straight.
I have been getting chiro on it too, but that only gives relief for an hour or so.

Hi
I had it with my first and the only thing that relieved it was sitting/ lying down and a support belt. Then I was admitted at 33 weeks for a different problem and it basically disappeared as I was sitting on my **** for 24 hours a day until 38 weeks and I had a great hospital bed which I could adjust so my knees were raised when I went to sleep which was a great help. It disappeared as soon as Jess was born. But apparently it will only get worse with each pregnancy as it doesn't "mend" in between IYKWIM so each time it gets weight on it, it will start to separate more.
This time, it started at 12 weeks and the support belt just pings off so I've stopped wearing it. I'm getting to the point where I've told DH that I'm going to stop after 2 kids as I'm just in pain most of the day except when sitting and lying down. One girl I knew last time ended up in a wheelchair for the last month of her pregnancy, it was so bad and that was only her first.
I did go and see an osteopath who advised me to wear supports in my shoes (available in good chemists) and also told me about my posture - which helps when standing - she told me to tuck my tail in, have your feet slightly more apart and take the knees off "lock" and relax them a little. You feel silly but I don't think anyone else notices that you're standing a little different.
Sorry most of this is negative but I hope the last part helps.

I had a friend who had this, probably 6 years ago now, i thought she was being a whinger but boy was i wrong...... I got it at around 34 weeks with no3, i found the worst thing was getting in and out of the car and trying to walk up a slight incline was impossible. I complained about it every week at me ante-natal appontment and eventually at 38 weeks when i turned up for my appointment i just burst into tears (all the receptionist did was say, pea in that cup oh and you'll probably have a 2 hour wait today as they are running late). I couldn't stand the thought of sitting on a plastic chair for that length of time and just broke down, they whisked me away and put me in a room by myself and low and behold who did they send to see me????? The psych consult, she asked me if i felt suicidal or if i wanted to harm my baby, i said no i was in excrutiating agony and wanted someone to help, she said she thought i was sufferig from ante natal depression, i told her if anyone in this room was mad it her not me (sorry don;'t mean to infer that people with depression are mad, far from it, but you know what i mean) and that i wanted to see the most senior person there> Bring on the consultant, who sat dwon and listened to me and said yes you have SPD i'll recommend you are induced on your due date should you still be hanging on and meantime have as much bed rest as poss, he reconed physio was probably a waste of time as i was so big and only had 2 weeks to go.
Bloody hell i had conveniently blocked this from my mind, i hope i don't have it again.
If you think you have it then stick to your guns and get some support, don;t be fobbed off as a whinger, the pain involved is something you cannot imagine until you have it, in my experience, worse than the birth.

Hi All,
Just thought I'd jump in and mention that there is a support association in Aus for this condition called the Pelvic Instability Association (PIA). We meet quarterly in Melbourne and our website is www.pelvicinstability.org.au - lots of tips on how to cope, personal stories etc.
All the best,
Kate

Does this condition (SPD) feel like you've been kicked in the pubic region  I had this feeling with my first preganacy and just thought it was the feeling you get when the babies head engages? It is very uncomfortable to walk, get up and feels like very bad internal bruising. Now I'm starting to feel it with this pregancy at 30 weeks!
Can anyone tell me how it is diagnosed? I have a routine check up on Monday and I will be mentioning the discomfort to them.
Me: Jessica ~ 27
DH: Nathan ~ 28
DS1: Hayden Cadel ~ 3
DS2: EDD ~ 11.9.06

Certainly talk to your ob/midwife, you probably need to see an obstetric physio to get a proper diagnosis and management plan.
Cheers,

Hi
When I saw my OB he pointed me in the direction of www.newbeginnings.com.au which does maternity underwear but also a support belt, for those with SPD, and a support tube which can be worn under clothes. Have a look. I've just ordered the support tube so will let you know what it's like when I get it.
