Hi

At the moment, we are trying to get our DS to sleep longer during the day. He is a notorious catnapper. When he is finishing his sleep cycle, we roll him onto his side and body rock or pat him to settle/sleep. He falls asleep on his side. As this is a new thing, I dont want to roll him back onto his back as this may wake him up and then the process has been in vain.
Is it safe to leave them sleeping on their sides? I do regularly check him and listen for him (preparing myself for him to wake up) and his monitor is on that picks up movement.

Thanks, Mel (and Dad and Bub)

Hi
I had the same problem with my son.... putting him to sleep on his side and being to scared to put him back on his back.. my solution... was to leave him and check on him....... and then i would find that he had put himself on his tummy.. and this would stress me out.. but now i put him in his cot straight on his tummy... sleep times are soo much better now. i used to worry about his sleeping on his tummy.. but i found out that heaps of mums on here sleep there babies on their tummy.

We used side sleeping (and patting!) for DD. You could try rolling him back onto his back afterwards, but I never did.

I suspect that side sleepers convert to tummy sleepers sooner than bubs who are put to sleep only on their backs. I phoned the SIDS hotline when DD started to roll & sleep on her tummy. I was told that if she is rolling & wriggliing well then she should be able to get herself out of any potential trouble, and not to bother trying any of the devices that are supposed to stop bubs from rolling.

Thanks guys. Makes this time a little less stressful. Too many things to worry about all at one time. Hopefully he learns to sleep through his catnaps and that we dont have to side sleep him at all. He looks very comfortable side sleeping though - must come from me I love it too.
Thanks again
