Police: Man was paid $150 to beat up pregnant teen
Charges » Girl met stranger in the street and allegedly asked him to help 'terminate the baby.'
Updated: 05/23/2009 03:44:45 PM MDT
Fearing her boyfriend would leave her if she didn't get rid of her baby, a pregnant teen paid a Naples man $150 to beat her until she miscarried the child, according to charges against the man.
The charges filed Friday describe the attack in Arron Harrison's darkened bedroom, where he allegedly hit and bit the 17-year-old girl, who is seven months pregnant.
Harrison, 21, was charged with attempted homicide, a second-degree felony that carries a potential prison sentence of one to 15 years.
Deputy Uintah County Attorney Mike Drechsel said prosecutors are still mulling charges against the girl.
The beating happened after midnight Wednesday at Harrison's home near 1900 East and 2500 South in Naples, according to a probable cause statement filed with 8th District Court.
The girl initially told police she was taking a walk after an argument with her boyfriend when she was suddenly attacked by an unknown person, the statement said. She was missing her jacket and a shoe when her parents picked her up. She had a bite mark on her throat and belly along with several bruises, according to the statement.
But when police tried to take a saliva sample from the girl's neck, she admitted her boyfriend had told her he would break up with her unless she "got rid of" the baby, the statement said.
The girl allegedly told police she was planning to hitchhike to Florida when she ran across Harrison on the street. She said she didn't know Harrison before the meeting, but asked him if he believed in God and abortion, then if he would help her "terminate the baby," according to the statement. She said Harrison invited her into his home, where she lay on his bed and asked him to turn off the lights so she couldn't see him hit her, the statement said. He punched her in the stomach five times, slapped her on the face and bit her neck, she told police, adding that she wanted it to look like an accident or assault.
The girl gave Harrison $150 and left, the statement said.
Police drove the teen to the hospital to check on the baby. Monitors showed the baby was OK, but the teen was kept at the hospital. A mental health worker was called in after the girl threatened to kill herself, the statement said.
Police later interviewed Harrison, who claimed the girl had tried to kiss him several times when they were outside his house, according to the statement. He said he bit her on the neck and then punched her in the stomach accidentally while trying to get away.
After she kept coming after him, he pushed her in the stomach and she fell down on the front doorsteps, Harrison told police.
But Harrison later admitted to investigators he knew the girl was trying to kill the baby, and that he hit her in the stomach to help her, the statement said. He first denied taking money from the girl, but later said he felt bad about accepting it and threw it into a canal.
The 17-year-old is being held in juvenile detention.

Mom dismayed by pregnant teen's actions
Crime » She is accused of paying a man to beat her to miscarry.
Updated: 05/27/2009 11:52:52 PM MDT
Vernal » The family of a pregnant 17-year-old charged with hiring a man to beat her so she would miscarry said Wednesday they are bewildered by her actions -- especially since she had been planning to give the baby up for adoption.
"That wasn't her," said the girl's mother, Joni Merrell of Naples. "Her mind wasn't there. Obviously something had happened, but I don't know what."
Prosecutors allege the girl paid 21-year-old Arron Harrison of Naples $150 to beat her up after her boyfriend threatened a breakup if she didn't get rid of the child.
Relatives said Wednesday the girl, who is seven months pregnant, was in touch with a California couple concerning an adoption, which appeared to be going smoothly. But the girl's boyfriend demanded shortly before the beating that she choose between him and the baby.
The boyfriend, relatives said, is significantly older and has been emotionally abusive.
"She's beautiful. She had so much to offer," a relative said. "But she gets caught up with the wrong people, with the wrong men."
Prosecutors on Tuesday charged the girl with first-degree felony criminal solicitation to commit murder in 8th District Juvenile Court. She appeared in court for the first time Wednesday.
Deputy Uintah County Attorney Mark Thomas said Wednesday her case will likely remain in juvenile court.
Relatives said the girl's immediate and extended family tried to support her throughout her pregnancy. Thomas said there aren't "sufficient facts" that allow prosecutors to pursue any charges now against her boyfriend.
Juvenile Court Judge Larry Steele on Wednesday ruled the girl must remain in a juvenile detention facility. The ruling upset Merrell, who said her daughter would be better off released to her family.
Merrell declined to speak about the specifics of the case against her daughter, but said the girl has had difficulties in her personal life over the past year. Despite problems, the girl remained a good student and had hopes for completing college and finding a career, Merrell said.
One of six children, the girl often helped Merrell, a single mother, tend to younger children in the family, she said. The girl volunteered in the community, often assisted her mother with housework and was attentive to the needs of her siblings, Merrell said.
The girl's uncle is Uintah County Sheriff Jeff Merrell, who could not be reached for immediate comment Wednesday.
"She's a happy outgoing 17-year-old girl who has the world ahead of her," Merrell said. "Life is very important to her."
Merrell said she hasn't had a chance to speak with her daughter at length about what happened. She said she knows the girl and her unborn baby have been receiving medical care and both appear to be in good health.
Merrell said she doesn't know what made her daughter ask Harrison to beat her.
"I wish I knew what happened," she said.

This is what happens when people can't access safe abortions unfortunately.
From the sounds of the 2nd Salt Lake article she was planning to adopt out the child - sad she would suddenly do something like that cause of what the boyfriend said :(

No this is what happens when you have abusive irresponsible men who threaten their pregnant women. Nobody mentioned what a pr*ck who boyfriend is. I think all three of them should get their as*es smacked:no:(metaphorical use of language, please do no take literally).

True from reading what the family says in the 2nd article it sounds like he was pretty nasty to her (emotional abuse) - Says they can't charge him also though :( He must have said something really horrible to her to make her do that I reckon :/

Nothing can excuse any of their behaviour - the mother the boyfriend of the other man - lets just hope that the child goes to a stable home, has no long term damage from the assauly and that the girl recieves all the help she so obviously needs to become a good person one day,
Seriously I would hate to ever be in that head space - can only imagine how confused and scared this young girl felt to do something so horrific.
Certainly one more reason to make abortion a easier, more affordable option.
