hi
i have been thinking lately about what sort of work i can do from home. my best friend said i should start up a nappy laundering service for mums who want to use cloth but hate or don't have time for washing, drying and folding the cloth nappies. my friend uses cloth nappies too and hates washing and folding them.
what is your opinion on this as work from home?
have you or do you plan to use a nappy service?
what do you think of nappy services?

I think that it would cost alot of money to set up a laundering business these days! Especially with the water issues that we have! You would have to get a grey water filter etc, too complicated etc for me!
What about an ironing service?
That way you can do it while still watching the kids.
Just a thought

i was also thinking about an ironing service but it isn't my favourite thing to do. while i don't mind washing and hanging stuff on the line, i tolerate folding but absolutely loathe ironing. but as we are starting to get desperate for finances i have been considering it.
 anyone in brissy need ironing or laundry done? :D
When I had DD 10mths ago, I received as a present, a nappy service for 12 weeks which was fantastic!! They delivered nappies once/week and collected soiled nappies twice/week. The service wasn't expensive ($30/week? it was gift so I can't remember exactly), as they provided the cloth nappies, the large bin and bags - also you put everything in the bin - nappy, (liners if you use them), wipes/cotton balls etc. As they are a commercial laundry, they wash 1000+nappies at a time, at a high temperature to kill the germs & reduce the use of chemicals/detergents, as babies skin is so sensitive- logistically I'm not sure how a small operator could do this without having a higher cost. Then there is the water issues, having industrial size machines, and doing pick/up delivery - without wanting to be totally pessimistic, I think its too labour intensive to be worth it financially.

You may find you have health department guidelines to abide by to do that sort of thing.
I have used nappy wash service with #2, and honestly, I am happier washing my own nappies with #3.
If the weather is good, and you are hanging them out, that's one thing, but what about when it is raining? The cost of the dryer will eat into your profit. What if a flock of birds craps on your line when the washing is hanging out, and soils the clean washing - which you have a deadline to deliver?
I'm sorry, but I just don't think it is workable, nor would you be able to compete price wise with the laundry firms. Nappiewash in Vic charges $24.75 per week based on 16 weeks service of 60 nappies. And they supply the nappies, not the customer. I wash my nappies twice per week, and I have a huge pile of nappies - nearly 60 of them. Most people have only 24 or 36, I was lucky to be given some hand-me-downs. Then there is pick up and delivery costs.
