Hi Everyone

I've been giving some serious thought about starting a home-based, online business so that I can spend more time with my 2 yo daughter. Before I quit my day-job, I was hoping to get some feedback on my business idea...

I'm looking into selling pre-filled themed party bags, filled with really good toys/stationery/lipglosses etc, very few lollies/chocs, in a fancy box/bag with ribbon and a personalised message from the birthday child. My focus is on high quality products and presentation and convenience for busy parents.

My question to you all is, would you (or people you know) buy this kind of thing on-line? And secondly, would you be prepared to pay a little extra for the quality products?

Would really love to hear your thoughts on this...

No. I would always prefer to make those sorts of things myself.

But if I did, the goods in the bags/boxes would have to be safety sealed. So any chcocolates would have to be pacakaged and tamperproof and the same for lipglosses etc.

To be honest no i wouldnt. Part of the fun of preparing a party for my daughter is creating those bags myself. It is something we do together and she chooses all the party favours herself.

honestly? probably not. I enjoy doing it and I wouldn't pay more for someone else to do it. When you have a few kids at a party it adds up to quite a lot of money if you buy exy things too.

 Neither.

One of the best memories I have of my birthday parties as a kid was getting to help fill all the favour bags and wrap/tie/box them up.

:iagree:It's something a child really looks forward to IMO.

While I am sure there are alot of people who would buy them I personally wouldn't.

Simple fact is most people wouldn't be able to afford to pay for high quality party bags for a childrens party.

This too is something I enjoy making but I admit most of the little toys in my bags are from the cheap shop - costs absolutly nothing to do up nice bags.

I am interested though - what sort of price with postage would be on a party bag for eg - for a 5 year old child. Say 15 kids at the party.

I'd love to know what you'd charge too. If they were reasonable I might consider it

DD and I love putting together the party bags. It's part of the fun. So no, I wouldn't buy them. Plus, I'm always looking to do the parties for a bargain and it's so much cheaper to do it myself.

No, I wouldn't. Besides the fact that my children have food intolerances, so I wouldn't trust that another person would take as much care with that as me, I don't think anybody could do it as inexpensively as I could - and that's one of my priorities with children's parties :)

I think if you distributed Australia wide you'd get enough of a customer base to make it worth while. It doesnt' sound as though there would be that much risk to you, given that you will presumably be selling online and just buying what you need (little overheads).

I don't think I'd buy it for a kids party - because I would prefer cheap. You might think about other parties though - I dunno, halloween, engagement, whatever. There'd be no limit really - if you had lots of options you could just make them up as needed. Adults are more likely to be trying to impress each other. I think also if you tried to package it as a 'one stop shop ' ie invitations, maybe a banner, whatever else is portable, so people can tick several things off their list of 'things to do' then you'd get more takers.

I wouldn't personally because I like doing that stuff with the children....but I think there would probably be a market out there for it and it could catch on :)

I should also say that I will put my hand up and say I hate doing that kind of stuff, so I would get it, but not if the price was horrific.

Doing party bags for not just kids parties but things like halloween, christmas and weddings etc. as well would be better.

That way instead of being a kids party thing, you can be thought of more of a 'gift bag' kind of place. More occasions, more sales. :)

:) I put in for it a couple of weeks ago and it was approved the next day.

I had thought of it when I was pregnant but wasn't sure. Then you suggested it and I thought it was definitely the go. Also, I didn't really want to get rid of NCB. I like that, I've grown quite fond of it!

I did wonder how long it would take people to notice.

Well, great minds think alike!

P.S You have to give me 51% of the credit though when people tell you how cute it is :yes:

I enjoy all the party shopping so I wouldn't sorry.

Coming from somebody who has recently been trawling the net for party supplies, my advice would be to either be a one-stop-shop with ALL party supplies, or specialise in adult things like wedding bombonier etc.
Kids love being involved in the whole process so kid's ones would be far less marketable IMO.
However if you sold other things like invites, decorations, balloons, plates etc you could have boxes/bags which can be co-ordinated accordingly, then people would be more likely to buy them IMO.
You'd also need to pay to have a sponsored listing on google or something because it's HARD to get an internet business off the ground without marketing or dibs on tops of searches. (Trust me!)

Hi Ladies

Thanks very much for your honest responses and helpful hints.. gives me lots to think about!!

A few people have asked about price per bag. I'm still playing around with prices... these are some examples of products and how much I would need to charge to make it worthwhile:

for around the $4 you could get something like mini playdoh, bouncy ball, jumping novelty frog bubbles, mini mars and chuppa chump and stickers, packed in a mini noodle box and tied with (fabric) patterned ribbon and personalised thank you tag.

for around $6 themed bags like :

Music box: a wooden castanet, a wooden clown whistle, mini mars, chuppa chump, stickers, bubbles - packed in a bright noodle box with ribbon and a thank you card.

Box of Lego with mini mars, chuppa chump, tattoo, packed in bag with ribbon and thank you card.

Unicorn bag: Pink unicorn shaped bubble bath, unicorn stationery set (pencil, sharpener, eraser, notepad and clip, mini mars, chuppa chump - packed in an organza bag with ribbon and thank you card.

Basically, the money I would make is from paying wholesale prices and selling at RRP of individual products.

oh and flat rate of $15 for courier delivery australia-wide. (gees I sound like commercial, sorry)
