I have been watching Sunrise this morning and have been appalled at the general c**p being spouted about Australia and the World Cup.
Australia were beaten by Brazil 2-0 last night. The fall-out this morning is that that not only was the German referee c**p, but he was treating Brazil with kid gloves and awarded them more penalties than Australia because he was dodgy in some way.
It hacks me off that every time Australia lose at something they state it must be because the opponents cheated in some way or the referee was bad at his job etc.
They did it when England won the Ashes, they did it when England won the Rugby World Cup, they even did it when they beat Japan 2-1 the other day.
There is no doubt that Australia is a talented sporting nation, but that does not make them invinceable. The lack of good sportsmanship in this country is sad and it is hardly a good example to set our children.
Sorry for the rant but I'm bored with the attitude now.:ecomcity: :ecomcity:

I disagree. I think Australia has a good, positive attitude :)

Let me guess.......you are an aussie!!!!!
Someone just give David Koche a slap! (not that i promote violence in any way - ;) )
Mind you, the English team may go too far the other way perhaps. We are so self effacing - do you remember the 1996 World Cup when we won the award for being the most sporting team? Perhaps we need to show some of the arrogance of some of our allies and we may get further.
Its Wimbledon next week and we need someone to give our players an injection of enthusiasm. Poor Henman....carrying the hopes of a nation on his shoulders.

I also agree that many countries do it but let's be honest - it would have been a pretty tough slog to beat Brazil.
Well done to the team for making it this far though.
Caroline, I do agree about Koche though - I think he drives a lot of the attitude you are talking about.

I agree with you. Australia makes sport as something holy and the people who do it into heros and gods. :barf:

Krissy - you are an unknown quantity for an aussie. You'd better not shout that out too loud!! People will try and convert you!!!:D

Well it's to be expected really. This country was founded by whinging Poms, only natural we Aussies would follow suit.
Good on you Chelle, that got me laughing!

 That is one of the best comments I have heard all year!!
I am not a soccor fan, but you really cannot help but be proud of how well our boys are doing.....although in saying "our boys" its funny that only 2 players still live in Aus. Anyway, I only caught a bit of Sunrise this morning, but I was surpised to hear the penalty count of last night's game was 20 something to 9! Especially when all the other stats were basically the same. Now, Pom, Aussie, Brazillian, Italian etc etc - whoever you are - you really cannot say that it doesnt sound like the ref was a bit biast! I dont think we are whinging - I think we are just astounded at the lack of respect our Australian team is getting by all the other soccor nations.

Chelle: Ouch - but bloody good comeback!!!!!:D Sheer class!
Now you see - this discussion is good spirited.....why can't Kochie be as diplomatic? Or is he there to ignite people's tempers? It blinking well worked on me this am.
Kochie's there to stir didn't you see his big wooden spoon :D

Just been watching Sky news (aussie version) and they said that Australia had an awful lot of missed opportunities that they just did not make the most of.
Re the stats - as Benjamin Disraeli once said:
" Statistics are like bikinis - What they reveal is interesting...but what they conceal is Vital!"
Re the penalties: maybe Brazil was fouled more often than Oz. All I know is that if I were the German ref - I would much rather Australia go through than Brazil cos who wants to play Brazil in the later rounds?????? Germany v Brazil? golly, if it was possible to fix the match against that - now that would be more logical!
I do think the aussies have played well as a whole - and the game against Croatia will be a good one. England may well have Germany next round!!! YUK!
It's fixed, Brazil games will sell more tickets, it's entertainment everyone loves Brazil, Italy etc..well that's my story and I 'm sticking to it :D

Actually that sounds rather believable!;)
I do think the ref was a bit silly though!
the pom's having a whinge at us aussie's whinging.
Hey Caroline did you see that Henman was beaten by the one and only Hewitt at Queens:no: I wish we could get some new talent rather than relying on droopy draws Henman:rolleyes:
As for the "soccer" FOOTBALL goddammit, god forbid that it be said in the media that Brazil are the far better side:eek: Ducks for cover and awaits some pommy bashing

The ref was a freakin' nazi to both sides.
We lost to outright slip-ups from the australian defense. Neither of those goals were due to brazillian brilliance, just sloppy defense on our part and dumb luck on theirs.
I was expecting a whole lot more flair from Brazil, I must say. They just weren't on the ball. We lost, but against Brazil, that isn't saying much.
If only we'd had a football instead of a giant ping-pong ball to play with, at least three of our shots on goal would have gone in.

Manxie - you are living very dangerously!!!!
Mr Noodle: - I quite agree. I think pretending that Australia was robbed is denying the fact that defensively they probably could have played better.
Its odd, I have not seen any team play really well so far this world cup. You were right about Brazil. England have been mediocre bordering on the limping out of the starting blocks - we are just fortunate that our oppos have not set the world alight either.
I suppose the difference between Australia and England is that although we poms invented many of these wonderful (?) sports, we are now frankly mediocre at them. We don't expect to win, its nice when we do and there is one heck of a party once most people have picked themselves up off the floor.
Australia is not used to losing...and automatically sees something sinister when they do. Its a credit to you as a nation that you are bloody good at most sports. But even the aussies can have the odd thing that they need to improve upon, surely? Why put yourselves under all that pressure? ITS ONLY A GAME!!!!!!!!!!:D

Manxie - you ickle stirrer!
I can feel a yellow card coming on from one of those lovely patient moderators:eek:
To claim that a whole nation is a bunch of sore losers because a few knobs had a whinge about the soccer is a bit over the top. There are lots of us who actually dont give a toss and didnt even know who won or loss, or even that there was a soccer match on last night, but you cant win, I will probably be accused of being unpatriotic now  there are also lots of people who did watch it and no doubt graciously accepted defeat.
on the whole pom thing I hate being called a pom I find it really offensive considering it means "prisoner of mother England" which i'm not I left :D
...awww coops I think it was little tongue in cheek - what us "poms" (Sorry M&P) being sarky - never:D
I agree that we are becoming a nation of arrogant a-holes how couldn't possibly be defeated in a fair game, but I also believe it has alot to do with the americanisation of Australia. Damn little Jonny.

Blimey, I go off for a short while and the thread deteriorates!!!
But I think its getting back on track now!
the nicknames for all of us be they poms, aussies, whatever are ok if they are used in a friendly manner. What annoys me is when someone like the odd tv presenter decides to use them in a context that has some seriously negative tone.
Coops - I'm sorry if i offended you with this thread, I just believe that good sportsmanship is important and commentators give the aussies a bad name. Our children are influenced by people they see on TV.
PN I saw that show OMG it was hilarious!
saying things like the birds sing to nicely in Australia like WTF
Caroline you better stay keep an eye on us :D

When all else fails, blame it on the 'americanisation of Australia'...
and don't forget to blame 'little Johnny' for good measure.
Now that my friend, is bad sportsmanship!

I was proud of the way Australia played, disappointed by the outcome sure, but proud nonetheless.
The only thing I find myself whinging about is the fact that the Brasil fans are allowed to bring whistles into the stadium. What the hell is that about?
The whistle is the only voice the referree has, yet they let 60,000 people bring them along to the game??
There were a couple of times I was out of my seat asking "what the hell!? How was that a foul?!" only to realise it was a fans whistle id heard.
Then there was the aussie player who stopped and let the ball roll out near the brasil goal when he was wide open because he thought the ref had called offside.
Also when Ronaldo was carded for ignoring the ref's whistle for offside!!
Don't they stop to think perhaps its not such a good idea for the crowd to be blowing on whistles the entire match?
Absolutely ridiculous.

Thats a harsh way to speak about your loved one!!!!! If that does not translate in australian language then I'm way too much of a lady (!!! ) to explain!
Sorry for lowering the tone!!

I haven't read all the posts but felt the need to reply to the couple that I have read.
I am not Aussie born but have been here for 10 years, grew up in NZ for 17 years and was born in the UK and lived there for 10 years. I have always noticed that the Aussies have terrible sportsman ship which is really sad to say as I love it here and don't intend leaving. When NZ lost you really didn't hear much about it (while I was living there) but in Aus when they lose its all you read and hear about how this ref didn't do this and that lines man didn't do that, instead of saying well the other team was better on the day.
Marks & Spencers for sure is a very famous name and even though I left the UK at the tender age of 10 I still remember them and even made a point of finding an M & S when I went to visit family 18mths ago.
Yes the POMS are very good with comedy - Faulty Towers, Absolutley Fabulous, Mrs Bouquet (bucket) , Carry on movies, The Goodies, the list could go on. Even the kids programs were excellent and still are.
I reckon good on the Socceroos, they did very well and on the other side of it is that its not over yet so think of the experience they will gain. :D
I agree that we are becoming a nation of arrogant a-holes how couldn't possibly be defeated in a fair game, but I also believe it has alot to do with the americanisation of Australia. Damn little Jonny.
MY DH AGREES WITH THIS 100%! He wanted me to tell you he couldn't have said it better himself.
I have had a problem with this since i arrived in Australia, it just annoys me how they can't just report a game without putting a spin on it that the aussie's were robbed, and the Ref must have been biased. The commentators annoy me so much i end up watching with the sound turned down. they can't just say 'Good game by the socceroos but the better team won'. They have to say it was a conspiricy (sp) and that the goals shouldn't have been allowed....blah blah blah.
I have lived in the UK, NZ and here and I have to say I have never experienced bad sportsmanship anywhere like I do here.
