I have an appointment for my daughter to see a well-known and highly-recommended paed next week. I was gobsmacked to discover that its $280 for our appointment! We'll get $120 back from Medicare - but it made me wonder, what IS the average cost of a good paed?

Wow, that is a lot of money, he'd better be what they say he is... Normally the first appointment is between $120 to $200, and thereafter is around $50 to $120 per visit.

1st appointment ??
if so that is the higher end of normal i guess you could say. ours was around $240 and then future consultations dropped to around $100 i think (DD1 hasn't been back for 2 years now so my mind is a bit hazy)

Yep that sounds standard for a first appt ... Especially if they are a well known, well trained Paed ... They have done more study & work so you pay for that expertise iykwim !
The follow up appts will be cheaper !
Same here:)
$280 first time and the following visits - $150

Yeah sounds about right for a first appointment.
We took DS to a "high end" paed for his six week check up as he had a mild heart murmur at birth and that was about what it cost - and that was in 2006.
Subsequent appointments should be less than that though.
They don't miss you huh.
Our first appt was around the $250 mark, and we pay $95 for all followups, and get $53 or so back.

Why do people see paed? Do you see them as your usual GP for your kiddies or for special things, and what are those special things??

Some like the idea of having a Paed on hand but really there isnt a need for them for the 'standard' child because your local g.p does everything you need iykwim !
I think using them as a g.p is a bit over the top in come cases but then I often have ours as my first port of call as I no longer trust just any doctor touching G.
G sees one because of his GORD ( reflux ) & bowel issues as he keeps watch of them plus is the one who goes between the GI if there are any other problems iykwim as it then means he doesnt have to see him as much.
Boof has only seen a Paed due to a tongue tie at birth otherwise thats it.

Yep. That's about the cost of a good pead. Most the Peads my boys have seen have been NSW and the 1st visit was about $210. Subsequent visits were $110.
However, i did just pay a ridiculous 1st visit fee to see a pead about my DS1's language delay-- $400! That was for a 45 min consult. He didn't say/tell me anything i didn't already know...he just gave me his written diagnoses so now i can actually get help for my son!
