My son was on zantac and now 10 mg of losec once a day after trying 5mg which did not work. I thought he had improved but he stil seems in pain occasionaly and refuses bottles. He has also had to take antibiotics that have given him dioreah. A little bit of it got on his thigh and burnt his leg which tells me that whatevers coming straight out of his stomach is still very acidic. Should losec be stopping this though as it blocks acid production? Is there anything next like an increased dose or another medication that cold help?

The antibiotics will be playing havoc with his gut so you need to give it time to settle down again this will be why he has the runs & why its all acidic etc. It takes roughly a good 2wks to get things back on track but can still take a little longer before their system is right again.
How long has he been on the increased dose ? It takes a good 2wks to kick in & then it takes time to see a difference with some kids because they are still 'reacting' because they still have pain from the damage the acid caused etc. So usually a 4wk period is given but that being said if you are finding he is in too much pain etc then I would suggest going back & having a chat with your Paed.
There is another reflux medication called Nexium that many have success with but sometimes tag teaming a combination like your Losec & Zantac are whatc needed as they both work differently.
Hope things settle soon !

Yeah it is the antibiotic that gave him the dioherea as the same antibiotic also gave my daughter dioherea at the same age. I gave him two doses of is and he'd already had about 7 bouts of dioherea ina 12 hour period so I stopped giving it to him. They told me he had some white cells in his urine but the initial tests didn't show a uti so I figured there is really no use giving him this antibiotic only as a precaustion if it makes him so sick. My daughter was on it for about a week and it didn't settle and made her bottom bleed from so much dioreah. She actually had a uti so I had to change her to a different antibiotic. Went back to hospital doctor yesterday and they said on further analysis he had no uti the white cells were just probably there because he has a cold.
As for the losec he has ben on it a month and is still crying when he burps or vomits. He doesn't cry nearly as much as he used to but he is still upset sometimes mildly and refusing bottles. He was also on zantac for about 1 month. The doctors at the hospital told me there is no other option as he is on the strongest dose and best reflux medication. I need to make an appointment with our paed but I just wanted to know if there is another option or the hosp doctors are right there is none.

The hospital said there is no other option
Dear God no wonder many mums are left with inconsolable babies & why these babies often end up with various issues due to this :(
For starters they could be trialling Nexium or tag teaming the Losec & the Zantac if need be .... Did they even get you to try upping the dosage of Zantac before changing ????
Gosh its so frustrating when doctors dont even know what to do :hair:
I suggest speaking with your Paed & seeing what they say otherwise if they are of no help then find a Pediatric Gastroenterologist ... This is their area of expertise so have a much broader knowledge & arent so reserved in their treatment when its needed !
Good luck :hugs:
my paed said they have now found that for losec to be successful it needs to be giving twice a day
have u tried this?

Thanks guys he's in a bit of a state at the moment as well as he has an upper respitory virus so I will wait till that clears up assess his feeding and then make an appointmnet with the paed.
Oh reallytee that isn't even as bad as how my partner and I were treated when we bought a 2 week old refluxy DD into er. We didn't know what reflux was at all all we knew we had a 2 week old baby that suddenly started projectile vomiting and screaming for hours on end. We were worried and took her to er because we were new parents. The doctor said to me how would I know she is acting differently as she is only 2 weeks old and I am putting her health at jeopordy by bringing her to a place where there were alot of virus'. He didn't say those exact words but yeah about that my partner wanted to throtle him. After I burst into tears he told me he would admit us overnight because I WAS DISTRESSED. He also mentoned it may be reflux but gave no advice or talked to us about medication at all that was it just admit us for the night because he thought I was hysterical. Oh god I'm glad I know what reflux is now but I was so disgusted at how they treated us like we were over reacting first time parents.
