does any one know if scaley skin behind the ears could be craddle cap ,, its not really in her hair, but she did have a heat rash flare up on the face ,scalp and little bit on the body and it doesnt seem to want to clear properly and is pretty dry,, she is 7 weeks old now.Is sorbolene cream good for this, the pharmisist told me to not use oil based products as it clogs pores,, i have been tempted to use rose hip oil, but have refrained and gone for sorbolene ,but it doesnt seem to be doing much,, any better ideas??

Vallerie had cradle cap, just on her scalp though.
I think that pharmacist was talking out of his ar*e, quite frankly. Olive Oil is the best thing for cradle cap, you massage it in and then the next morning just brush gently (with a soft baby brush) or even just rub with your fingers, and the scales fall off. I would think that if bubba's skin is dry, some olive oil wouldn't hurt that either. Especially if the sorbolene isn't doing anything.
How often do you bath her? Vallerie was bathed every night, and her scalp and skin was always dry in the first few months. Curtis on the other hand (and this could be because I'm too busy, or rather, lazy :p) has had 3 baths in his life, I put him in the shower with DH about once a week, but apart from that he just gets a "sponge bath" if he seems to need it. The skin has natural oils that will look after itself, the more water/creams/lotions/potions we rub in, the more the skin overcompensates and dries out.

The_Queen .. you rock! I just gotta say you are great with advice.
..I agree.. go with olive oil for sure.. Sorbelene cream contains chemicals.. it's not as natural as they say. Stay away from any chemical cocktail baby washes you buy in supermarkets.. it's best to stick to natural soaps and calendula oil for after...
DS had a tiny bit of cradle cap in one eyebrow and when we asked the pead at the 6 wk checkup he said it was common for it to be in the eyebrows or behind the ears. He suggested sorbolene cream, olive oil or vaseline. The sorbolene cleared it up for DS after one go but there wasn't much there. Hope this helps. :)

I also found sorbolene didn't work very :( well so I used paw paw cream and dermeze and they both worked well :smiliedance: . They are both availabe from chemists and aren't expensive. Good luck and I hope it clears up soon.
The nurse told me not to use sorbeline Almond oil is really good otherwise Id assume olive oil would be just as good.

Our ds had cradle cap quite badly for a couple of months.
We tried almond oil but he had an allergy (nuts) and heaps of other things, calendula, etc. All had the same effect. Olive oil ruined clothing and bedding, we found..maybe we were just a bit random with our application:o
The thing that worked the best for us was a paste of 1:1 baking soda & water - about 1 teaspoon of each. Mix it to form a paste, apply gently with your fingers or a cotton ball, rubbing gently. Leave it for 5 minutes and then rinse off in the bath or wherever you are doing it. Comb bubba's hair (if applicable) or rub the scalp softly to loosen the flakes (ne-oice), or they may fall off by themselves over the next few hours.
It really didn't bother him or his skin.
It didn't happen overnight but it did happen..

I agree with the whole bathing thing !
I found this dried Boof out too much so he was lucky to get bathed once a week in the end i mean they dont really need it as they dont exactly run marathons lol !
I used baby oil it worked fine for us but once i stopped the frequent bathing Boof never got it back. I only used to baby oil as i got it as part of a gift so needed a use for it lol !

Don’t be worried, scaley skin behind the ears is actually very common with little babies. More often than not the problem is just about moisture causing an irritation to the skin. Dark, awkward little places like behind ears and between little toes tend to attract moisture and avoid being dried fully after bath time (and drooling sessions). The skin thickens scales and cracks. Can be a reoccurring problem over the first year and especially likely if you little one’s skin is a bit sensitive to heat, humidity and such.
The best advice I ever got for DD was to gently rub away the rough skin after a warm bath (to soften the affected area). Ignore the baby wash packaging that says no need to rinse, ALWAYS rinse with fresh water and dry the area thoroughly and regularly. Sounds too simple, but worked for us in no time. If the problem continues try doing the above and then moisturising the area with a little olive oil or glycerine and sorbolene together. :fingerscrossed: hope it works for you.

My DS had the dry skin behind the ear and between his eye brows i found that the Amolin nappy cream was fantastic!! I had used it on the brow and then the health nurse said to try it behind the ear and it cleared it up great :smiliedance:
My DS had REALLY bad cradle cap on his head, eyebrows and the skin behind his ears was also very very red and dry,his skin was soooo dry that one day when i was bathing him,he was very happily enjoying it then all of a sudden he started screaming his head off and would not stop, this was a really loud "im in pain" cry so i get him out of the bath was dressing him and as i went to dry under his chin/neck folds he was BLEEDING !! i hadnt noticed it and the soap got into it so thats why he was crying so much, poor little guy.The ECHN told me to try sorbolene or Bepanthen(sp?) it worked great, but his cradle cap was i different story,i tried everything ! went to the chemist and he recommended Egozite it did nothing other than make my DS hair fall out BIG TIME !! i had to cut all his hair off with the clippers !! not a good look :( :o

for cradle cap i found that the Aromababy barrier balm was really really good for it. I put it on him over night, or during the day and then wash out in the bath in the morning or night. It is really really really good (and his hair didnt fall out) :yelclap:

arthursmum .. lol @ it didnt happen overnight, but it did happen!!:yelclap: :D :D :D thanks for all the info,, i feel abit more at ease now, its not really settling ,but does seem to improve at times, like when we are out in the fresh air so im trying to keep the house temperature dowm a little,, and i am trying something called emu oil, might try the almond oil , it has always worked for me*__* has anyone ever had it stay on the face for a while and flare up 3-4 times a day??
Both of my girls have had very bad cradle cap. When No. 1 was 1 yo and still had no hair on the top of her head, we were prescribed a preparation containing salicylic acid (not sure on spelling!). After a year of trying everything, this worked in 3 - 4 days. She is 3 now and has a tiny bit there, which I can ignore because it's covered by her hair.
No. 2 had the same problem, so was prescribed the salicylic acid at about 3 months - same fabulous result.
Hope this helps!

We were prescribed the same preparation and i had to wait a day to pick it up from the pharmacy. that was the same day that we tried the bicarb soda thing so i didn't actually ever use the prescribed preparation..maybe if the cc comes back i can use it!

well yesterday , i put almond oil on it and kept it nice and moist,, but this morning it is crusty yellow around her ears and eyebrows,, im trying not to stress out, i know it takes time for these things to heal ,, i think it is starting to itch her too,, so i might give the bicarb a go,,,
...well, i tryed the bicarb, and she screamed blue murder, but the oil was starting to work,so we will stick with that for the time been. its a tricky one to get control of, i remember my son had eczma in the crease of one elbow, it took along time to go away, and improved after i took him off dairy and gave him a b vitamin supplement,,
i got a b vitamin liquid today for myself and while breastfeeding, hope fully that helps the balance for both of us,,

i'm so sorry that she screamed:crying: little man didn't mind it, the first time i think he was more bothered by the attention around the head area rather than any sortof pain & after that he was fine with it. i'm really sorry that your bubba was so upset, i wouldn't have recommended it if we had had screams or crying going on  :crying: good luck with all the other lovely remedies suggested..i'm so sorry

My nearly three year old STILL has it. I use antidandruff type shampoos on him now which keeps it under control.
My four month old has it also and yes they get it behind the ears and on the eyebrows too. I've always used dermaveen. you can put it in the bath and it keeps their skin really supple esp in winter. Then at the beginning of the bath i put some right on his head or behind ears....when i'm ready to get him out then i wash with face washer and baby body/hair wash and hey presto....gone.
