Our 2 week old is quite a good sleeper, in the day, but tends to like to stay up and 'socialise' after our 3am feed :o
his not grumpy, unless i try and put him down, he just seems to want to look around.
We tried keeping him awake more during the day but he could sleep through a world war! So that was hard, but i think it helped a bit.
Also i thought of coffee.
I am breastfeeding and havent drunk coffee since i fell pregnant. If i did drink it would it go through to my breast milk and help keep him awake a bit throughout the day. If i drank it in the morning say, how long would it take to go through to him? And is it safe?
Any advice would be very appreciated. Thanks

I'm not sure about the coffee part. But the usual advice for bubs who are a bit mixed up on night and day is to make sure to get them outside in the sunshine (shaded!) during the day. The daylight, particularly in the late afternoon, helps set their internal clock.

Also make sure that you're not initiating the play at the 3am feed. No talking, cooing, singing etc with bub. But just get him up, do the feed, and back to bed with minimum of fuss and minimum of lights.

Babies less than 6 weeks old don't have developed circadian rhythms, this part of their brains hasn't matured - they can't tell day from night, awake periods might be during night or day.

The 6 weeks is an 'on average' thing, so its good to start exposing your baby to daylight when awake during the day, this helps the circadian rhythms, and your baby might develop these earlier than the average. But don't get too worried if not, might take longer then six weeks too. Everyone's advice is always just try to sleep when the baby sleeps, and that you won't be getting up so often at night forever, though I know this isn't very helpful when its happening!

So coffee is probably not going to help set your baby's body clock, because hardly any babies would have a body clock to set at 2 weeks old. I don't know if its dangerous for babies, but I think caffeine would go through in the breastmilk, like alcohol and other drugs.
