How often do you bath your baby?
DS I did every second night.
I have been doing my DD who is 3 weeks every second night too, but I've found she sleeps soooooo much better and settles easier at night when she is bathed.
Have you bathed everyday? I'm considering it, but worried it will dry her skin out.....
I do everyday and she sleeps very well:)
Her skin is fine :) I hardly ever use her body lotion when I bath her
Hi. DD is 4wks old and I bath her every night as she sleeps better. Her skin is fine as well.

Eeek! You guys make me feel lazy!
I bath DS about once or twice a week, and also if he does a powerpoo (easier to shower him than use a dozen wetwipes!)
He sleeps fine without them, and when I bath him it's during the day when it's nice and warm.
He doesn't really get dirty though... we clean his nappy area every time we change a nappy, and he gets his face and neck washed with a damp washer whenever he needs it after a spitup.

If/when I have a third, I'll be doing exactly the same.
we bath the bub most nights, but only in plain water. if she;s looking a bit dry we add a small amount of QV bath oil right at the end.

My mum was at me and at me to bathe DS every day. So we did. It was a huge hassle, we all ended up throroughly soaked - and he WAKES UP from baths! Seriously he sleeps much worse on bath nights.
So now we bathe him once a week, and make it a Sunday afternoon! That way it doesn't affect his sleep!

I am the same. I don't think they need bathing any more than that.

Yes but the fluid is not water, it's amniotic fluid which is especially for bubbas to be in for 40 weeks.
Also, while they are in utero they are coated in a thick substance to help protect their skin from being in fluid for that amount of time. I can't remember the name of the substance they are coated in though sorry.
:)
Most every day, unless it's a busy day and she hasn't done an exploderpoo. Mostly at night, as DP likes to bath her so he does it when he comes home from work. It wakes her up, so we don't do it as part of her bedtime routine - it's usually when one of us is cooking dinner (the other one will bath the bub). For variety, I sometimes take her in the bath or shower with me. She loves it :)

All I can say is, I feel absolutely FERAL if i dont have a shower everyday.. I bathed my son twice a day in the first few months and then it was just once a day at night as part of his bedtime routine... i kinda thought once a day for kids was the norm when it came to baths ?
we bath each night, more as a routine thing, not so much a 'clean' thing.
just in plain water too.
(and he has beautiful skin, hehe)

We bath our bub everynight.
Bath, feed and bed.
Settles best with a bath... we tried to put him to bed once without a bath and he wouldn't sleep lol... So he needs that bath.
It is clean to bath every night ... i mean he poos and wees everyday ! So i like to keep him clean... !
It relaxes them to, and he loves the bath has so much fun in there! So i do it for him as well!:yelclap:
Oh his skin is soooooooooo beautiful and soft... i don't think bathing everynight dries their skin out...
I oil him up though he loves a massage after the bath ! They say massaging them in baby oil is good to?

I think a baby is different to an adult who is very active all day and would perspire a lot more. Too much bathing can dry their skin. Tam-I-Am made some good comments a while back about bathing and what not to use on a bubs skin.
I bathed mine each morning, we were taught it was part of the 'routine' - hmm change that, the second and third probably got dipped in the others bath water:rolleyes:
If you clean them thoroughly at nappy change then I could see there is no need to do it daily.
It sounds like there is a lot of different things taught about it anyway.

Since the day my babies came home from hospital, they were all bathed every single day.
There is something so sweet about a nice, clean baby in fresh pj's.
I have never understood not bathing every day, I personally think it's GROSS  I shower every day so why wouldn't I want my kids to....

I have just started bathing DS every night at about 5pm. He loves it and it has become part of his sleep routine.
For the past 13 weeks though I bathed him maybe twice a week, and a quick shower when he did a poonami. :)

I bath Jasper a couple of times a week to be honest - I just dont have the energy and he's an absolute monkey in the bath I have to wrestle with him to stop him drowning himself the way he splashes and thrashes around!
In fact, Jasper has had one BATH this month! He has a shower with me, its just easier!
I was bathing him every night for months though, to establish a sleep routine and his skin was lovely - because I'd give him a full massage after his bath. Now his bedtime is solidly established, he doesn't NEED the bath to know its bedtime, 7pm on the dot he's in bed and asleep within minutes - too easy!
I do give him a head to toe wipe down every night, cos he's a chuck monkey, so I need to clean out his chin rolls and he hs senstive skin so I clean and dry out his leg fat rolls and everything - he is cleaned daily! I just dont bother with a bath or shower every night.

Every day here! It is just a routine thing really. They have a bath, then milk, then cuddle and bed. Both kids sleep really well. I also think getting them used to the water early on has helped with their swimming lessons! :)

How long does this routine take you every day?
It takes DH and I together an hour to get DS bathed and dressed. And he always wakes up more as a result. And his eczema is always worse after a bath.
All good reasons to only bathe him once a week. He doesn't sweat like we do, and he really doesn't get that dirty.

Very young babies just don't need bathing daily I reckon. They don't crawl around yet to get dirty, they don't eat foods that make them smell (stand next to someone who eats a lot of curries or garlic and you'll get an idea how what we eat can affect our body odour), they get cleaned after every poo or wee, they don't run around and get sweaty etc...
When I bath my boy, whether it be shower or bath, it takes around 5-10 minutes (once we have the towels and water ready)... just enough to get him clean, have a bit of a play, and get him wrapped up nice and toasty again. ANy more than that and he starts getting restless, so we like to keep it short and sweet.
Every night it is part of our bed time routine, ds sleeps much better after a bath.
My other 3 were bathed nightly aswell and no skin problems for any of them.

When she was just a little tiny boo, born in the middle of winter, it was a couple of times a week. She just got flannel baths daily and a proper bath every few days.
As of about two months of age we started bathing her every night as part of her go to bed routine. Feed / bath-play / bed.
Now she has a bath every night with her Dad. It's their special time together, they absolutely love it - she LOVES the water and it's still part of her nightly routine. She's had a tonne of hair since birth, too, so we wash that twice a week or it gets smelly.
She's been a crawling, active bub since five months old so she's always dirty. She sweats a little bit, too, and gets a kind of baby must about her that is SO cute. I love her smell!
I thought about doing it in the mornings but that seems pointless to me - I'd rather she go to bed clean and wake up clean (can't really get dirty in bed) and then have a bath at the end of an active day, than put her to bed all dirty and then bath her when she wakes up, only to get dirty again. That doesn't make sense!
Bathing her or being in the bath with her is one of my favourite times of our day.

:iagree:
Mine are now 15 months and nearly four, we live on a farm. They get a wash daily. But when they're new? I don't think they "need" it.

To the person who asked, btw, the covering on their skin inside the womb is called laguno.
And I agree that when they're very little a daily bath isn't necessary, unless you want it to be part of a routine. I think they're little skins are self-cleansing, almost, when they're tiny.
(Although it's a great excuse to get them nekkid and kiss them all over their wriggly little bodies) :D

I can bath, wash hair and dress my 4 in an hour lol. I swear the more you have, the faster you get :)
Wow this thread makes me feel odd- we bath our little guy twice a day once in the morning with mummy in the big bath and at night in the baby bath as part of his night routine been that way since he was born. Our guy loves baths though.

That's the hair. The stuff that protects their skin is called vernix... it's the white waxy stuff.

every night here, from birth, she started sleeping through from 4 months. Her skin doesnt dry out, she gets very dirty during the day and she is also a sweaty baby LOL how glamorous!
She now has a bum wash in the sink after her daily crap too...soooo much easier than finding the wipes after I have forgotten to wash them!

i used to bath her every day and it did actually dry her skin out she started peeling quite badly so i cut it down to every 2nd/3rd night and it fixed the problem. i will go back to bathing her every day when she starts crawling/moving more/off looking for the dirt:laughing:

Very interesting to see different perspectives on cleanliness! It reminds me of one of my japanese students who thought westerners were dirty because we sat in our own dirty bathwater without showering afterwards, and we used one towel to dry our entire body. She had a towel for her face, a towel for her body, a towel for her hair and a towel for her 'privates'. She also had separate washcloths for each area.
I wonder howoften japanese babies get bathed?

My lil man gets bathed or showered daily or every 2nd day. i dnt see a point of bathi ng if they havent gotten dirty.
I usually put him in the shower with me whn i have one its is so much quicker and convienant.
I bathed everyday. She used to sleep really well after a bath. It didn't dry her skin out at all.

When both my kids were newborns I bathed them on average every 3rd or 4th night. I have a doctor friend who said it wasn't good for there skin to wash them every night. They are both toddlers now and I HAVE to give them a bath every night as they get so filthy.
If your baby settles better after a bath in the evening then by all means do it. Just try and avoid lots of soap. Maybe just use warm water every second or third night?
