View Full Version : What Are Your Best Cold Remedies?

My 8 month old DD has her very first cold :( and it appears to be a beauty!! Poor mummy is very sleep deprived & looking for some tried & true magic remedies!

I have repeatedly given her saline drops for her nose (yes, brave of me, I know!!) and suctioned all the mucus out with an aspirator (marvellous things, aren't they?!). As I am a huge fan of the old Vicks Vapour Rub for myself when I've got a cold, I have also been applying some Baby Balsalm to her chest & back before bed.

Tonight I put a couple of drops of eucalyptus oil in her bath (we then had a great time trying to discover where the koalas were hiding!) and a very small amount on her sheets.

We don't have a vapouriser, although I hear these can work wonders.

What is your best remedy, bearing in mind there's not much you can do medicinally for an 8-month old?

TIA!

When I first saw the title I immediately was going to offer up my best cold cure...beer and Sudafed (I stumbled upon this remedy in my early 20's!)
Then I read on and realised you wanted a remedy for your baby...so strike the beer and Sudafed.
The only advice I can give is the Fess saline spray, Eukyrub and maybe put a pillow under the cot mattress, just to elevate her head a little.

We steam up the bathroom heaps just before you take them in for their night bath. Helps loosen it all up. We also do all the other stuff like balsam, eucalptus oil etc etc. Try Dimetapp too if you get really desperate and give panadol if she has a temp or you think she may have a headache. Keep an eye on it but cause elliot just ended up with bronchilitis - after ahving a cold for three weeks - and they had to put him on steroid treatment for three days!

Good luxk and hope she gets better xxx

Thanks Mamaduke!

I was actually having problems laying her down to sleep because as soon as she'd lie flat she'd just start screaming, but would settle back down once I held her upright (must be blocked sinuses). So I will have to give that pillow tip a try if she starts doing that again tonight.

And thanks for the beer & sudafed tip too! If I manage to catch this little beauty from her, I'll be giving that tip a whirl also!!

Oooh! Good one KateP about steaming the bathroom up! I will give that one a go! In fact if tonight ends up being anything like last night, I'll be straight into the bathroom, trying that one out tonight!

My DS also has his first cold (same age as your DD). The women at work suggested rubbing Vicks on the soles of his feet. The feet are a pressure point and I'm not certain what role the Vicks plays. I've been doing this for three days and I have noticed his cough is subsiding a little. His nose is running more though.

I have heard that one before actually! I'd forgotten all about it as it was some years ago.

I don't know that we really need more snot at this point!

Hope DS (spewie, I assume?!) is feeling better soon!

Don't worry - the snot is the cold regaining its strength following a 'family' get-together in the freezing cold last night. Poor DS looked like the Michelan man but the horrid cold goblins weren't put off. I got sick again as well.

(And yes, DS is Spewie though we haven't called him that for about three months now...maybe I should change my name...)

Can I just play the 'water nazi' for a sec...
Please, please don't steam up bathrooms by running the hot water for endless minutes at a time!!!
Water is precious and a vapouriser does the same sort of thing, just with much less wastage.
It's just a real thing with me...wasting water!!!!
I can understand doing the bathroom thing for a night before you're able to hire a vapouriser, but please, I'm begging you, from one human being to another...don't waste water.:crying:

Totally hear you MD!

But it's all good! Our bathroom is a terrible design & totally steams up if you so much as breathe in it on a cold night! I normally have all the doors & windows open right up as I'm filling the bath so that I can see where everything is (and to avoid any dramas with mould!) so if I forego the normal de-steaming ritual (or even just fill the sink with hot water & a bit of eucalyptus oil) that will be enough to keep us going for a while!

Don't worry Mamaduke - we aren't wasting any water. Our abthroom is so small and by the time we put the hot water in the bath before adding the cold, our bathroom is steamy. We just dont put the ventilation fan on until the bath is over. :p

Oh...phew...thank you girls...I can sleep easy tonight!
I was going to mention that if you want to steam up your bathroom, run the bath and then have a bath - at least then you're getting some use out of the water.
Well that's a load off...okay, as you were...cold remedies...

Oh i meant to say, that the trick is - if you have a shower over bath like us - is to use the shower head to put the hot water in and then add the cold from the tap - this is the other reason it gets so steamy with little water.

Glad we have reassured you MD!
