I assume a nappy bucket is just a regular bucket with a lid??
How many does one need? I recall reading having two buckets. Why does one need two buckets? Is one for wee and another for poo?
I assumed ther would be one bucket you shove the dirthy stuff in and then washed the stuff at which point the bucket is ready to be filled again.
Also, all the nappies I have been buying talk about dry-pailing which seems to be just shoving the nappies in after removing soiling.
This sounds simple enough but I was just wondering, how does it not smell?

yep that all i use the same bucket i used to put my tery flats in with nappy san! Just now put the nappys straight in there rinsing first if they r soiled. Yeh it does smell a little but no worse than a rubish bin with sposies in it. I have read on here somewhere about bi carb soda taking the smell away! I find washing every 2 days maked them not to bad at all!
yeah, i only use one bucket! which, yes is just a bucket with a lid- i have a pretty one from big w i think, which was given to me as a present, but lots of people just go to bunnings and get a good sized bucket with a secure lid (which is much cheaper!)
and yes, dry pailing is just chucking the nappies in the bucket ince you've rinsed off poo (some people don't even rinse off liquid poos- it just comes out in the wash... i rinse:D) and for wees, just straight into the bucket. once full, wash!
i find my bucket doesn't smell too much- and i wash every second day. well, it does smell but it's not a really horrible smell! some people use pail pals or add a few drops of lavender, tea tree or eucalyptus oil to the bucket to make it smell fresher.
HTH! I also had questions like that when i first started with MCNs, but after a while, you just sort of figure out what works for you.
I have 2, but you probably only need one, i just switch and use the other while I clean and dry the first, I dont NEED it though. Apparently you dont need a specific 'nappy bucket' but I got mine at bigW for like $10 so its not a great expense.
I just rinse the poop and pop them all in together.
It smells a little bit, but not like gross toilet smell or anything. Plus you pop a lid on it so its well contained. If it starts to get stinky, I wash them. Generally I wash every 24-48 hours so they arent really sitting there all that long.

sometimes they do smell (hence why they recommend a bucket with a lid LOL) sprinkling some bicarb on the bottom will reduce it as the bicarb will absorb the smells (hence why it is recommended to be put in the fridge with smelly foods) ...
I only use one bucket which is actually a 'nappy bucket' like my mum had for terry flats...
Actually I am going to go against the grain here with ppl recommending a bucket with a lid. I began my cloth journey many years ago using the whole bucket with a lid that sealed to contain the smells etc.
However, in the end I found the best thing was one of those plastic laundry baskets that have the holes in them like a basket would (and it also has no lid).
Obviously I rinsed the nappies first, but then I placed them in the basket which sat in my laundry tub. The more air that gets to the nappies the less they are going to smell. Don't believe me just try it ;)

I have a Pooh Bear bucket.. I got it from Kmart.
Its fine, it has a lid which I can use, or not, as I choose and it has pooh bear on it... Which I like.
Honestly it doesn't matter much to me, I only use it to cart dirty nappies to the laundry. :)

I used to have one bucket and just threw nappies straight in (unless they were crazy soiled). I would wash them every second day and would soak them overnight in water and Napisan before washing. I never had issues with it smelling BUT I only used cloth while my bubs were breastfed only! As soon as I started using formula or they went onto solids I started using disposables because thats when stuff got stinky!!

What type of nappies were you using?? Napisan (or any chemical treatments) isn't recommended on MCN as it breaks down the PUL lining giving them a shorter lifespan and leaving them less waterproof

I used...the white old fashioned  ones! I think they are called terry flats or something like that... When I think of nappies I don't think of all these new-fangled cloth things :p
I use 2 buckets (bunnings with lids and some cute stickers on teh side). One sits next to the toilet whilst the other airs outside, they get rotated when I wash usually every other day.
I don't have a bucket, I have a kitchen bin with a flip up lid that we got from Bunnings. :p It is easier to use and fits in tight spots in the laundry rather than a short squat bucket.
My sister is going to have 2 buckets, but only because she has a 2 storey house and doesn't want to be trecking up or downstairs with a wet nappy after each change. She plans to just grab both buckets every other day and do the washing, then have one upstairs and one down again.

In case anyone wants a free bucket, heh.. :o
thought I would mention that boost juice places will give you square bucket container things with lids that they get their sorbet in - the bigger ones usually have a sign somewhere around the shop to try to give them away as other wise they throw them out as they aren't exactly recyclable.
I got a few the other day to use as a compost and for art supplies:D very handy.

I have 2 buckets with lids, only coz 2 full buckets will fill a load in the washing machine, one is only half a load, so I hate doing half loads.
I find the wee stink a bit much sometimes though, I should try some of those bicarb things...

i use a red square bucket that i got for a couple of dollars from bunnings i think. no lid. i don't want to be affronted by that ammonia smell when i lift the lid! mine sits on the top of the washing machine which is near the back door so it gets well ventilated. i don't find it smells...only when i get to the bottom of the bucket and the ammonia smell is concentrated. my bucket only smells of wee...all poo goes in the toilet. when DD was on bm only the poo didn't smell bad...smelt almost sweet lol but yeah no lid here....a friend who had been doing mcns for a while told me the no lid secret :)
and ps. nappy buckets can cost a bit!

i have 2 buckets for this reason too. i have a small one upstairs with a lid. downstairs in the laundry i have a big white bucket with a lid but i hardly use the lid as i stand at the baby gate and just throw the nappies in the bucket. easier to do if the lid isn't on
Hi ladies -
I am wondering how big the buckets are that you are using. DH and I just bought a small stash of MCNs to try with our first bub (due July 4th) and we are debating as to how big of a bucket we will need.
We got a 15L bucket with closing lid from Bunnings, but DH thinks it may be too small. We have a relatively small multi-level townhouse we are renting so I don't want something massive if I can avoid it.
I'll probably need to wash every day and eventually every other day, at least for the time being, as I probably cannot afford a massive stash at the moment AND I need to figure out what brands/styles will work best for our bub.
Thanks!
