View Full Version : Baby lost his spark

HI all,

I desperately need some reassurance or advice!

My husband has had a bad head cold, whilst I have had only moderate symptoms (slightly achy, and raspy throat). My 10 week old is not congested, is feeding well, has no fever and has had a GP check him over and gotten the all-clear.

I am still a little concerned about him however as he just seems a little bit listless, needs HEAPS of sleep (like 18-20 hours per day) and just generally seems to have lost some of his "spark". He hardly cries at all and seems to be in a bit of a daze a lot of the time. This has been going on for about a week and it is starting to freak me out!

I am wondering if my son is likely to feel somewhat similar to me (as he has been receiving my antibodies through my breastmilk and may have contracted only the same low-grade symptoms like myself) and therefore is just slightly miserable and behaving accordingly, or whether there may be somethig else that is wrong.

The GP said that he would cry a lot if he felt bad and that there is nothing wrong with him...but a mother knows when a baby is not himself.

Can anyone shed any light on the variety of baby behaviour when they are a little off-colour - do they always cry or can they sometimes just go a bit quiet?

Cheers!

If you are really concerned, perhaps take your baby to another doctor.
Having said that, I remember when ds was sick for the first time, and he was very listless, but it didn't go on for a whole week, just a couple of days.
If baby is feeding well, wetting nappies normally, and having normal bowel motions, they are all very good signs.
Is there anything else which may have caused baby to feel under the weather? such as vaccination? - it is a stab in the dark for me - I don't know if babies have vax's as early as 10 weeks, as I don't vax.

Hope your little one, and the rest of the family as well - feel better soon!

When was the last time you had your bub weighed? Is he putting on lots of weight? How many nappys a day are wet? The same thing happened to my bubs at 6 weeks and when I went to maternal health I knew something was wrong and he had lost 170grams. Losing weight can cause them to be very lethargic, they don't cry and seem to want to sleep all the time. A mum always knows when something is wrong so go with your instinct and get bubs checked by someone else.

I'd go to another doctor. It's not worth sitting around worrying for another minute. Trust your intuition. I think it's better to be a little over-cautious when it's their health. They're so precious.

Hi everyone,

Thanks for your advice. Eli ended up picking up and now seems to have 'gotten his groove back' - such a relief! Prolly I panicked a bit prematurely but it's so hard to know what is normal and what's not when your new at this!

Cheers, Mel
