DS2 was prescribed to have 10mg twice a day and it has seemed to do wonders. Our pediatrician told us to try to stop using it when I started to feel that he was better.

A month ago we stopped it cold turkey and it ended up being a nightmare. He just screamed all day every day so we started giving it to him again.

Last week he started sleeping better and generally being more content so I decided to halve his dose. We have just been giving him 10mg once a day.

Yesterday he starting chucking again. Not projectile vomits like he did before but after every feed now he has been bringing a bit up. He hasn't been complaining about it so I just want to know if I should just keep going as we are or do I go back to what we were giving him before?

Hey there!

My DD is on 20mg per day also. Maybe halving it is too drastic a move at the moment, and maybe going to 15mg per day (10mg in the the morning and 5mg at night) would be a more softer change? The you could see whether that is working over a period of a few weeks and know whether to go back to 20mg per day or try going down to 10mg as your next step?

I am in exactly the same boat- my paediatrician told me to start bring down Eden's dose slowly (20mg to 15mg to 10mg etc) and I tried it for the first time last week and it was a complete disaster. I had to go even higher with her dose to bring her back to normality again. Now I am trying to lower it again and it is still creating havoc (pain, massive projectile vomiting across the room, refusal to feed etc :crying: ...) . So I am just sticking with the higher dose for the time being and will try again in another month or so. I figure its not going to hurt!

Hope this helps!!

Cheers! :)

From my experience with reflux meds, the only way to know if bubs no longer needs them, is by trialling a small and gradual decrease in meds over a long period of time. If you do it slowly like this, it means that if bubs gets worse it's not going to take too long to get back to where you were. Especially as the pain will be minimal compared to that of a large decrease in meds.

Good on you for trying...but i agree. If bubs has reacted and gone back to old ways, then it's not time to decrease the meds. Wait a few months while on pescribed amount of losec and try again. But in small incriments...as Edensmama suggested.

If baby is in pain due to a a trial decrease, it will take a little while (approx 1-2 weeks) for the pain to subside. Don't go increasing meds more than dr prescribed unless dr has suggested to do so..just hang in there til bubs heals.

The reflux journey is not fun..for either mum or bubs.

Hi there

My little one was diagnosed with silent reflyx at 4 weeks old and was on losec (eventually 20mg) till he was a year old. We tried weaning before that but like you it went bad!
I was told that long term usage of losec was fine....so I waited till her was crawling and walking - so he was more upright....all went well then.

Side note - we are having dramas with dairy with sam and I wish i had been told that reflux kids have a 50% channce of having intolerances and allergies...so watch out:)

Yep I agree with others here just take bubs back to the dose he was on originally & wait a few months & trial a reduction again & see what happens.

Although reading through your post again you say bubs is vomitting with no pain, is that right ?

Losec doesnt stop vomitting so that could be due to bubs overfeeding, a tummy bug or whatever else so I would possibly keep bubs at the reduced rate for a little longer & see how things go.

If there is no screaming or what seems like pain then it sounds ok.

Vomitting can be completely normal for any bubs its if there are other issues associated with it that it becomes a problem iykwim.

I know even back when G was on 30mg per day as well as other meds for his GORD that he would still vomit but he wasnt aspirating as bad as he was & he was finally gaining small amounts of weight & that was classed as 'ok'.

Just see how things go over the next few days otherwise go back to the original dose & stay with it for a while yet. Around 10-12mths is usually the time they recommend reducing meds if you can & also trialing to see whether bubs issues say with food intolerances have dissappeared as this is when the gut really starts to become more mature than it has been before.

Thanks everyone for your advice.

We had a rough night last night with him screaming so I think it would be for the best to go back to what we were doing before.
