View Full Version : glucose test
anyone who had the glucose test done, how much sugar drink do they make you have and how long does the test take?
It's a small bottle of drink.
They draw blood, give you the drink, then you wait 2 hours and they draw some more blood.
All in all, it took 2 and a half hours out of my morning including all the waiting time.

just be warned the drink tastes absolutely foul. it is really really sweet. i like sweet things and it was way too sweet for me. and they make you drink the whole thing.
i even asked what if i had to throw up. they said i would have to drink another one. :barf: :barf: :barf:
Really?
The drink they gave me was like a slightly sweeter lemonade. Not all that unpleasant really - sort of like that Sprite Recharge stuff.
Certainly didn't make me feel ill.
hope they give me one that tastes like sprite recharge...not bad at all lol
oooh I LOVED the drink ... it is like ULTRA sweet flat lemonade .. YUMMO!!!
I wanted to order a carton!!! - my only tip?? take a BOOK!!! .. the magazines in my pathology place were all REALLY old .. and I read them within 30 minutes... then I had to just twiddle my thumbs!!!
good luck - its not that bad... just hope that the results are lovely!!

They gave me a bottle which would have been around 250 to 300ml that I had to drink in 5 minutes (harder than it sounds!) - it was a really sickly sweet concoction.
I waited 1 hour and then they drew blood. The drink can apparently make some ppl nauseous - fortunately I was ok
All up it was only around 1 hour 15 mins. And best news was my results were great!!!
When I was preg with DD I had to drink a bottle and a half of Lucozade (sp?) it would have been ok except someone had forgotten to put fresh bottles in the fridge so I had to drink it at room temp :barf:
They didn't take blood before I drank it, I had to wait an hour then go back and get blood taken...they let me go for a walk while I was waiting.
When I had that test with DS I went to a different place and was given the flat lemonade stuff, it was a pretty small ammount compared to the ammount of Lucozade I had to drink.
I guess it depends on where you go to get the test done :)
Good luck, hope your results are good.
Isn't it funny how different all these tests are? I would have thought it would be standardised from the waiting times to the type of drink used ...
My drink (cool and very slightly fizzy) was a pleasant one. I had to drink it down pretty fast though - the pathologist hovered over me refilling the plastic cup each time I put it down until the whole bottle was gone.
I was under strict instruction to NOT walk around or be active in any way at all during the 2 hour wait. I was even told to try not to go for a wee.
I was also told that if I felt nauseous at all, to let someone know immediately. She told me that it wouldn't be the drink or the test that brought the nausea on, though, just the whole being pregnant thing.
Totally in agreement with veve regarding taking a book along. Not that I did much reading when I was waiting ... I found it pretty hard to keep my eyes open (I had an early morning test).

My test took 1.5 hours from start to finish including waiting time. I had to drink 300ml of what tasted like straight green cordial (gross! It was waaaay too sweet!). I was under strict instructions not to walk or move more than was necessary. They took blood before the drink, and 1 hour after I had finished drinking it.

Sorry for bumping this, I was just wondering during the glucose test are you allowed to wee? Its not like the ultrasound with the NO WEEING thing is it? :fingerscrossed:

I have had to do two different types of tests. The Glucose tolerance test that most women do at 28 weeks usually involves a blood test, followed by drinking the foul tasting sweet drink and then waiting for an hour remaining as inactive as possible. Most pathology places allow you to go to the toilet if it doesn't involve a long walk. After the first hour they will take your blood again. That's usually the end of the screening test. If your test comes back with some doubtful results you then have to undergo the full test which involves fasting for 12 hours prior, a blood test, foul tasting sweet stuff, wait an hour, blood test, wait another hour and then have your final blood test. Once again you have to remain as inactive as possible but should be able to pee if you are close to a toilet.
Good luck with your test. Be sure to take some magazines with you or a good book. It gets very, very boring!!!

Oh god I hope I don't have to do the fasting one too, what a waste of bloody time.
Im gonna go in for mine early august a few days before my 28wk gp visit.
Can you just walk in and get it done, cos its a pathology place?
Hi, I had to do the fasting one and it definitely had to be booked, in fact I had trouble finding a place that didn't have too long a waiting list (this was in Brisbane).

Are you guys all private?? Because I'm public and I just had it done at pathology in the hospital the same day as my ante natal appt. Just went to pathology, had the drink, went back for my appt. then went back to path for the blood test. Reason I mention this is that, if you are public, you shouldn't have to book in anywhere. Your midwife or dr. will organise it for you and jsut give you the slip to give to pathology. BTW - I had a finger ***** done right before teh drink - apparently to check my blood sugar wasn't too high before they dosed me up with more sugar!! This didn't happen last time so I wasn't expecting it. I'm not scared of needles, but I don't like them either so I like to be prepared!
