View Full Version : What do you use on holidays?

There have been a few threads about using cloth nappies on holiday. I am about to go for a week holiday and am a bit worried about taking cloth.

Just wanted to know what you all do. If you go sposies, both, or just cloth.

Thanks, looking forward to the replies

I used to buy disposables, but my DD gets such a bad rash from them.

So, now I take everything with me. We have travelled interstate several times (by car mostly), and here's what I take:

- A nappy pail
- A container with damp cloth wipes ready to go
- some plastic bags in case there is a really bad nappy in transit so it can be sealed
- A PUL nappy bag for the wet/mildy dirty ones

I then just deal with them when we arrive at our destination.

Having said that, we mostly stay with family, where there is obviously excellent washing facilities. It might be a bit harder if we were camping or something.

Hope that helps!

It depends on the holliday. If there will be access to washing, or its only a couple of days, then cloth. A week long camping or road trip, I would have to go disposables.

Depends what type of holiday.

If we are flying I go sposies on the plane (especially if it is a long journey) as I find it nice to arrive at my destination without a load of washing before the holiday has arrived ;).

I mostly stay in apartments which have some sort of laundry facilicites and if not I know in advance and take the quick drying inserts for my pocket nappies.

I really only use sposies for the journey and cloth while on hols.

We are heading over to Perth for a week soon and I plan on taking all of DD's cloth, but my Mum has bought some sposies just in case. I think she figures it will be too much effort to drag a bunch of cloth nappies around for a week away from home.

I want to only use DD's cloth, but may use some of the sposies, especially if someome else is changing DD and are a bit worried about using MCNs.

We took all cloth nappies on our holiday in March. We stayed in a self contained unit so washing was no prob. They had a clothes airer to hang them on, otherwise we would have taken our own. We had no issues

This thread makes me realise that I haven't ever gone on a "holiday" with my baby...

Going to Grandma's house in Canberra doesnt' count. They have a washing machine, it's like a home away from home.

I'm just a bit worried about how long I can leave them before they need to be washed

At this stage we use disposables when we travel. Im hoping to start taking cloths on weekend trips though once we have enough... and if we're in a self contained appartment or with relatives then i dont mind taking cloth then either.

If we go camping we go sposies, but bub gets around in terry toweling training pants anyhow!
If we go motel or family i take cloth generally you can hang the nappies over things (like chairs) and they dry anyhow! Sometimes i take my clothes airer (small one) as it takes no space, i also have one of those hanging things that are used generally for smalls like socks and undies (has pegs attached) and that works for nappies too.
My bub gets terrible rashes from sposies so i do try to avoid them.

I'm thinking of doing that when we fly to Perth next week. Since we are leaving from my IL's I can just pinch a few from them before we go (we don't have any sposies in the house now). But then I'm worried that Alice might have a flair up of nappy rash after 5hrs on a plane in sposies.

I change sposies really often when flying so that Jasmine doesn't get a flare up. I always take enough sposies for every hour of travel (so to go to the uk I took 28 sposies) and a couple of extras in case of delays. I changed her every two hours (unless she was alseep and then as soon as she woke up) and she was fine.

To minimise space in your hand luggage pack them in batches of five wrapped in glad wrap - it takes the air out.

That's a great idea about the gladwrap! I think I might try it!
I just don't want to be getting in to Perth at midnight with a wetbag full of nappies and forget about them in the morning! :dizzy:

I have always used sposies when on holiday, out for the day and/ or night. Even when I did use material nappies for the first 18mths full time [at home] it was just easier for me.

Hey Teegzie,
I know this might sound pointless but I was wondering if you had thought of putting a thin cloth liner inside the disposable nappy. Maybe one that draws the moisture away from Alice's bottom. That way you have the best of both worlds... A long lasting nappy (because it would still hold the wee really well) and no nappy rash.
Just a thought. Might seem to be defeat the purpose but I figure one tiny liner won't be much hassle.

Actually the liner idea is a pretty good one! I've been meaning to make some liners anyway for Alice's night nappies so maybe I should head to Lincraft and grab some fleece.

Yeh I thought it could work.
It definately would make life easier for you. If you do try it please let me know how it goes.

I'm wondering how many of my cloth I should take for 5 nigthts/6 days in Perth. I don't want to fill Alice's whole suitcase just with nappies! But I'd like to keep her in cloth for the holiday because they are better for her bum. We're staying at my parents so I guess I could wash each night and hang the nappies out near the fire place (but not so near that they might melt! :p).

I'm about to try Weenies pouch pants with the disposable (flushable) pads instead of my usual sposies on holidays. As the pad is flushable and the cover quick to dry it shouldn't be too hard and nothing will be going to landfill. Fingers crossed it works well!

I find they work really well but have to be changed quicker than regular disposables. Hope they work for you.
