Hi everyone,

My little ones first immunisation is coming up next week. Any tips, suggestions, experiences you would like to share with me to make it easier for us.

Thanks

i have always given my son panadol 30min before injections and he has never been bothered by them...

i have also heard to put something like bonjela on the leg before the injection to numb the site but i havent used that one...

I have always timed it so that my son is due for a feed right after the immunisation. This way, we get home from the clinic, give him a feed and some panadol and then he usually is worn out and has a nap. He's quite perky afterwards!

Bub has always done fine after she's had the injections, but I get my Mum to come along just in case bub is upset on the drive home in the car - and to be honest, it's great to have some moral support for me too :o .

You usually have to wait at the clinic for 5 or 10 minutes to check that there are no immediate side effects. Also if they throw up they might need the oral polio dose again (if it's still oral?). Most mums either breastfeed a bit or offer a bottle or dummy during that wait since bub is usually very ****ed off and upset at being jabbed.

my little one only has a squeal as needle goes in and then goes back to himself. we haven't had to give him panadol for needles yet. must say he screws his face up at the oral polio- one can only imagine what that tastes like :p

I rub Arnica cream on both of my son's legs on the morning he is getting the immunisations.

We had our 8 week needles last week :( I didn't give panadol before cause i didn't have any but straight after the needles I have her a BF. She didn't actually feed, more like used me as a dummy. I just gave hersome panadol when we left the Dr's.

I gave my dd some panadol about 30 mins before she was due for the injections. I noticed that some of you mentioned that you fed your babies afterwards to help settle them. I was told by the nurse who administered the injections not to feed dd for about 15- 20 after the jabs, whats up with that??!!

Ive never heard that one before!! I've always fed Brianna straight away after her needles - it helps them forget about the pain!! Our nurses always told us to do it!

It might have been to reduce the risk of them throwing the oral polio vaccine back up.

I didnt think of that. Could be the case.

We were told by the clinic that if the bubs threw up after the oral polio vaccine, that if they threw up within 10 minutes of the does, they had to have it repeated. If it was after 10 minutes, it was fine, as it would have been absorbed into the system already. Thats one of the reasons they ask you to hang around for 10 minutes afterwards.

Thanks for all your advice. Immunisation went well. There were three people crying in the room - bub, mum, grandma. Bub was a bit grizzly in the evening but slept through the night well.

I checked with the health nurse whether it was ok to feed after the oral dose as when I had it (I had to be revaccinated in the military because they woudn't accept my childhood vaccination certificate) I had to wait 20 mins before drinking eating. It was fine with the health nurse to BF straight after. Raleigh has her 4 month ones coming up soon and I don't think I'll have much left in the way of Breast milk left by then. I hope I have enough to keep her happy. I tend to get around 60-70ml out via pump 4 times a day. I guess some is better than none (she's supplemented with a bottle)
