Hi everyone,
I'm posting like mad at the moment - I'm like a sponge soaking up all this great info and recomendations - well trying to anyway, preggo brain seems to have kicked in in full force!!
I have pretty much decided that Burnside hospital is my first choice, just wanted to hear from anyone who has had a child there and what their experiences were like.

Hi,
I haven't had a baby at Burnside, had mine at Ashford. My OB doesn't go to Burnside. Some of my friends have had babies at Burnside, it is meant to be very luxurious, some had problems with midwives and others didn't. I think they only take deliveries of babies after 36weeks, so if you go any earlier you would be transferred, but you may know that already.
The people I know had a mostly good experience there, good luck with your choice.

Hi there :)
Two of my closest friends delivered there and loved it! My SIL had her baby girl there as well last November - she couldnt have been more thrilled with the staff and services of the hospital....
I have booked in to have my bub there next January (:fingerscrossed: ) My Ob delivers there! I had the choice between Calvery and Burnside however after seeing both Maternity Sections of each hospital I decided on Burnside.....
I also like the fact that they have anetal classes there for a full day on a Saturday....Cant wait!!!
Sorry I cant be more help!

My sister was born there a few years ago and my stepmum couldn't have been happier. The rooms (suites) were luxurious... they didn't make a fuss because she wanted to bottle feed and the meals looked great!! (if i remember correctly they even offered premium beer) lol... probably the last thing you care about.
It was a really lovely place!!! No problems with having to leave early/staff etc...
My girlfriend had her baby there a few weeks ago and couldn't speak highly enough of the hospital and the midwives. She was EXTREMELY happy.

Thanks everyone. I called and spoke to a really nice lady there last week and have arranged to go in and have a look. All sounds very nice, I'm excited about "checking it all out"
Thanks again!
My sil had both her babies at the burnside hospital and she LOVED it!
It felt more like a hotel than a hospital which is always a good thing... she stayed the full 5 days both times because she didnt want to go home.. it was too nice

I am surprised to hear words such as 'luxurious' being used to describe the rooms.
I had my first child at BWMH last month and I thought the whole place was pretty crusty. My bed was about the size of a postage stamp (I am not a big person at all) and just old, uncomfortable and bashed around. The furniture was a mishmash of old crap and the nurse call/ remote was out of reach of the bed. Sounds trivial but after a heap of stitches it matters.
The bathroom was grungy and water goes everywhere in the shower and there was an open drainpipe in mine - in MAJOR need of an upgrade.
The paint in the room was very dirty and a contrast of pink/ orangy brown and just really drab. There were dead bugs in the light panel in the ceiling which made it feel even more like a bad motel. I also could hear my neighbours and their babies on either side of me very clearly which was annoying in between my own bub crying.
What upset me the most was that at the antenatal class they said that all the rooms were full so they couldnt show us through and then I rang a couple of months after to ask if I could come through with my mum and they said the same thing so I went there on good faith but regret it because I just hated being in the room and had I known what I was getting I would never have gone near the place.
To their credit, the food was excellent and the housekeeping was good too. The staff who come into the room are really tactful and always nice and willing to accommodate I found.
As to the the care, I found it to be inconsistent. At one end of the scale; excellent and at the other very disappointing.
If you are considering Burnside or any other private hospital for that matter, all I can say is do your homework and make sure you look at what you are getting. A nice room with good soundproofing and warm decor is really important. I didnt have huge expectations other than a clean crispy hospital room and ensuite with nice lighting and a comfortable bed with everything within easy reach.
I went to visit a friend who gave birth at Flinders public and I was blown away (and a little bit envious) to see the gorgeous modern room and bathroom and the excellent facilities they have there. There was no comparison.
All in all I am feeling a bit ripped off and mislead and I would give it a 3/10 only for the parking, great food and a couple of nice midwives who actually didn't judge me for not wanting to breastfeed.
Good luck :)

Sound proofing is quite important... I had mine at north eastern and half the time the baby next door kept me up more than my own!!!
I had ds at Ashford and had my dd last month at Burnside. I wish I had gone to burnside the first time around. I was so impressed with the facilities, staff, food etc. I didn't have one midwife I didn't like and they always answered the bell within minutes. My midwife I had in labour was awesome at coaching me through contractions. My initial room was small and crappy which they admitted but was quickly moved to a bigger room with my own courtyard which was great when my toddler visited. The room was spacious and had a safe, fridge, tv etc.
The food was delish and heaps of it.
I agree that in the evening when everyone had visitors it could get quite noisy but the midwives were onto people with lots of visitors that were loud. The only thing that I probably didn't like but didn't affect me was in the labour room the shower was shared. There wasn't anyone next door so that was fine but if they are busy I am not sure how that works if 2 labouring women need the shower. They also don't have a bath which is disappointing.
In comparison to my experience at Ashford I would definitely recommend burnside in a heartbeat.
Oh and the postnatal follow up was awesome too which I didn't get at Ashford.

I had DD at Burnside in 2009.
It was fantastic. Had my ob appointment at midday and got told I needed to have a c section or DD would die.
Even though it was really rushed to get us there and get a team togethr for the op they were all lovely and accommodating.
I am quite tall and the bed was going to be too short ao they gave me an extension so it was longer.
I think if you have a natural birth you can get a double bed but no for c section.
The midwives were fantastic( there was one worki there that worked there when I was delivered there)
and very helpful with everything.
The food was fantastic and they were very accommodating with DH.
Also they have a deal with the intercontinental hotel for a night or 2 there.
